Recovery Coach Integrated Care Centre

Edmonton, AB, CA, Canada

Job Description

About Radius Community Health & Healing (formerly Boyle McCauley Health Centre)

Radius Community Health & Healing (Radius) provides interdisciplinary, team based, integrated, comprehensive, and person-centered primary health care for vulnerable Edmontonians with complex needs. Through primary care and health promotion, Radius improves the quality of life and well-being of populations and individuals who face multiple barriers to accessing health services. Radius achieves this by providing the highest standard of evidence-informed and client focused inter-professional care. We collaborate with our clients to address the broad determinants of health.

The Recovery Coach role is a peer-based, harm reduction focused position based out of the Integrated Care Center in partnership with Edmonton Police Services. Recovery Coaches leverage lived experience to build trust, credibility, and connection with individuals during critical moments. This position plays a key role in reducing stigma and fostering immediate rapport by meeting people where they are at with empathy and without judgement.

Focusing on engagement, empowerment, and connecting individuals to health and social resources, Recovery Coaches support clients in identifying their own goals. The role emphasizes motivational support, practical harm reduction education, and informal navigation of health and social resources. Recovery Coaches help clients access services such as shelter, primary care, mental health supports, and community programs, ensuring they are not navigating complex systems alone.

While this is a non-clinical role, the Recovery Coach position is essential in bridging individuals to appropriate care, enhancing safety, and promoting positive engagement with support systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Engage and build trust by meeting individuals where they are at, without judgment, and creating a safe, supportive environment. Utilize lived experience to establish rapport, reduce stigma, and provide grounding support during critical moments such as intake or release. Provide harm reduction education by sharing practical strategies for safer substance use and overdose prevention. Provide tools such as naloxone kits and explain their use, while connecting clients to harm reduction services, including supervised consumption sites. Facilitate goal setting and exploration by helping clients identify personal goals. Utilize motivational techniques to empower clients to take small, achievable steps toward increased safety, stability, and wellness. Support resource navigation and facilitate warm handoffs by assisting clients in accessing housing, primary care, mental health and addiction supports, and other community services. This includes helping with calls, applications, or appointments. Promote empowerment and self-advocacy by encouraging clients to take ownership of their recovery journey by building confidence, reinforcing strengths, and provide guidance on how to navigate services independently. Celebrate progress and milestones aligned with client-defined goals. Document brief notes to support continuity of care and effective team communication. Documentation focuses on engagement, client interactions, and resource connections rather than formal assessments, clinical evaluations, or treatment planning.

Qualifications:

Lived experience Certificate or training in Recovery Coaching (or willingness to obtain). Demonstrated experience supporting individuals with substance use and recovery goals. Knowledge of harm reduction principles and trauma-informed care. Experience working with marginalized populations (experiencing homelessness, addictions). Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training preferred. Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) considered an asset. Current Basic Life Support (BCLS-HCP) and Standard First Aid. Valid Class 5 driver's license and reliable transportation. Recent vulnerable sector check and police information check. Strong understanding of cultural safety and inclusive practices.

Skills and Competencies:

Excellent relationship-building and communication skills. Ability to engage clients using empathy, patience, and non-judgmental approaches. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing situations. Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and comfort with electronic documentation (EMR). Ability to maintain professional boundaries while providing peer-based support. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities. Commitment to personal well-being and good self-care practices to maintain resilience in a demanding role.

Benefits:
