KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES


  • Trainees follow a 14-month program involving in-class theory, testing, and practical work experience to be able to perform varied, diverse, and moderately complex inspection, servicing, testing, adjustment, maintenance, repair, overhaul and/or replacement work performed on rail vehicles (revenue and non-revenue) and rail vehicle components and tools. Vehicle and equipment training will be dependent on the work location assigned.
  • Perform work on, but not limited to mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical (both alternating and direct current) equipment and systems associated with the propulsion, braking, suspension, heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC), door, coupler, trucks, car body furnishings, speed control, electro-pneumatic air supply and all power supply/conversion systems found on rail vehicles.
  • Conduct modifications and/or bench work involving the removal, testing, repairing/overhauling, adjusting and re-installation of components and participate in acceptance testing for rail vehicles and related components.
  • Act as emergency responders to trouble calls and/or accidents to inspect, repair problems, remove objects under vehicles, re-rail vehicle or prepare vehicle for movement to shop/carhouse, as required and provide assistance to emergency response teams.
  • Operate revenue, non-revenue, and maintenance vehicles outside of revenue service.
  • Use an information terminal including a remote information terminal or mobile device to input and retrieve vehicle repair information including drawings, schematics, parts list, etc. to assist in the repair process and ensure vehicle maintenance activities are documented.
  • Upon successful completion of the training program, the incumbent will be re-classified as a Rail Transit Car Mechanic and paid Wage Group 9, in accordance with TTC continuous service.
  • Demonstrates behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE


  • Completion of Grade 12, technical program or its recognized equivalent as determined by the Training & Development Department.
  • Successful completion of Community College level courses approved by the TTC in mechanical theory, or its equivalent through considerable mechanical experience and demonstrated ability; or provide proof of equivalency from an accredited academic institution.
  • Successful completion of Community College level courses approved by the TTC in machine shop practices, fluid power (hydraulics and pneumatics), and principles of electrical theory (AC and DC fundamentals); or provide proof of equivalency from an accredited academic institution.
  • Qualified Industrial Mechanic Millwrights, License 443A; Automotive Service Technicians, License 310S; and Truck and Coach Technicians, License 310T will also be given consideration for this position.
  • Successful completion of the TTC\'s training program for Subway/SRT or Surface Rule Book.
  • Ability to comprehend verbal and written instructions.
  • Possess a valid non-probationary Class "G" Province of Ontario driver\'s license.
  • Pass written and practical tests that correspond in content to the knowledge, theory and/or practical requirements described above.
