Classification: Temporary Full-Time (until approx. August 2024)

Summary of Duties
The Radiation Safety Assistant works with the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the Department of Medical Physics to assist the RSO in ensuring compliance with federal and provincial regulatory requirements for radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Assistant is accountable for effective control and management of radiation-safety-related documentation and databases, and management of the occupational dose monitoring program at OCC.

The Radiation Safety Assistant performs these administrative and functional support activities.

  • managing all operational aspects of personnel dose monitoring, including use and maintenance of personnel dose monitoring devices and coordination of radiation exposure report dissemination
  • monitoring the shipping and receiving of radioactive sources and maintaining an accurate source inventory
  • ensuring timely calibration of radiation survey meters
  • conducting the Radiation Safety Program\'s self-audit and daily QC test audit for medical linear accelerators
  • ensuring correct documentation of staff training compliance
  • maintaining the access control database for staff and visitors
  • managing and improving the radiation safety document management system for nuclear energy worker (requests for access, authorized access and user lists, training records of authorized users, source inventory, meter calibration, construction drawings).
  • participation in radiation safety research and development projects
Qualifications and Skills
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree or diploma from a recognized institution
  • Recent related experience in quality control, document management, and database management
  • Ability to follow good documentation practices, including document management
  • Ability to handle multiple job responsibilities while meeting tight and conflicting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated initiative, time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to address and follow-up with radiation safety issues in a timely manner
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and independently
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Committed to continuous improvement in the radiation safety program
