Job Title Quantitative Research Engineer



We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Quantitative Research Engineer to join the Quantitative Investments team at RBC Global Asset Management. As a Quantitative Research Engineer, you will collect, gather, clean, and shepherd data through alpha research, portfolio optimization, backtesting, and visualization. Your success and that of the team will be driven by your expertise in quantitative methods, financial data analysis, data validation, data governance, and data visualization combined with your passion for systematic quantitative investing and deep desire to explore and understand both established and novel financial datasets and internally derived data. You will report to the Head of Research, Quantitative Investments.

The Quantitative Investments team employs a systematic quantitative approach to the management of equity strategies implemented via mutual funds, hedge funds, segregated accounts and ETFs. The team takes a multi-factor approach to building and managing investment solutions. The models are data-driven and grounded in sound fundamental and economic rationale. It is a highly collaborative environment in which the research, portfolio management and systems development teams constantly interact. The team manages CAD$20bn of client investments.

What will you do?

Identify, acquire, and maintain diverse datasets to support alpha research and portfolio management of systematic equity strategies, including pricing data, fundamental accounting data, and alternative data

Verify and, where possible, improve the accuracy and completeness of historical datasets required for backtesting and other research purposes. Propose and document key assumptions required when building historical datasets

Ensure data is fit for purpose, clean, complete, and implement data validation processes to identify, flag, and rectify discrepancies or anomalies in data on an ongoing basis

Create data documentation and metadata to ensure data transparency and work with quantitative developers to ensure data is available to users via easy-to-use tools and APIs

Contribute to research engineering efforts to develop, maintain and enhance the team\xe2\x80\x99s suite of visualization dashboards

Perform complex data analysis using advanced data manipulation techniques in Tableau, SQL, Python, Matlab, and related tools

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have

A passion for data and data-driven investment analysis

Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in quantitative finance, statistics/machine learning, engineering, data science, engineering, or a related field

3+ years of experience in the financial industry working with financial data; experience with equity data is strongly preferred; buy-side investing experience is a plus

Strong understanding of key mathematical and statistical techniques that are used in quantitative investments including portfolio optimization, risk management and performance analysis

Expertise in data governance, data validation, and data management processes

Strong programming skills in SQL, Python, and Matlab with experience in data manipulation and analysis. Proficiency in Tableau or other data visualization tools (Qlik, PowerBI, etc.), with a strong understanding of best practices in data visualization and dashboard design

Strong collaboration skills and a pro-active approach to communication. Ability to deliver accurate results that have impact on tight deadlines

Nice to Have

Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in quantitative finance, statistics/machine learning, engineering, data science, engineering, or a related field

Completion or enrollment in CFA

Experience working with modern cloud-based data ecosystem
