Job Description

Nova Construction Co. Ltd. (Nova) is a driving force in the Nova Scotia Road building industry. Over the years, Nova has built, upgraded, and/or paved more than five hundred (500) miles of highway in Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia for the provincial and federal governments. Well known for our expertise in "earth moving", Nova produces aggregates, pavements (highways, roads, parking lots, and driveways), builds bridges and marine infrastructure and operates open pit mines for coal and gypsum.

We are recruiting for a

Quality Control Tester - Aggregates based in Antigonish, NS to oversee the production of aggregates and asphalts, ensuring quality and the products meet specifications through out Nova Scotia. The role involves safe operations of sampling equipment for aggregates and asphalt materials. You will be responsible for the proper collection of materials to be evaluated, the proper and accurate analysis of the materials, and the accurate reporting and documentation of results.

Key Responsibilities:



Sample Collection:



Safely and efficiently collect aggregate samples from production or job sites for testing.

Material Testing:



Perform various tests on aggregates, asphalt, and soils to determine their physical and chemical properties, such as:

Gradation:

Analyzing the particle size distribution of the aggregate.

2.

Physical Properties:

Testing for moisture content, pH, and other relevant properties.

3.

Compaction:

Operating and maintaining nuclear density gauges to test soil and asphalt compaction.

Data Documentation:



Accurately record test results and maintain detailed, legible records in both manual and electronic formats.

Reporting:



Promptly report test results and any non-compliant findings to project supervisors and other relevant personnel.

Equipment Maintenance:



Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, keeping track of calibration and re-certification paperwork.

Process Control:



An ability to apply process control techniques and to analyze production data and assist in improving processes.

Safety:



Adhere to all safety codes, guidelines, and regulations, ensuring a safe work environment.

Skills and Qualifications:



Experience:



Knowledge of aggregates and asphalt considered an asset. Training will be provided.

Technical Knowledge:



Working knowledge of construction materials, relevant test methods, and agency specifications (e.g., DOT job specifications).

Testing Certifications:



Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications for testing construction materials.

Computer Skills:



Proficiency in entering and processing data using computer software.

Communication Skills:



Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.

Physical Stamina:



Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and work in various weather conditions at outdoor job sites.

Attention to Detail:



A meticulous approach to testing and documentation is essential for accuracy.

Valid Driver's License:



A valid drivers license and insurability is required, as you will be required to drive a company vehicle to sample collection sites.

Education:

Minimum Grade 12 and/or GED.

Working Conditions



Ability to work the project schedule which may include overtime, weekends, and/or night shift. This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and balance at heights up to six feet from ground level. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas. This job requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time. This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts). This job requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in less than favorable job conditions. These may include but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, sand, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time. Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease, and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment.
