What is GPP?
Good Production Practices (GPP) are Health Canada's rules for making sure cannabis is produced, packaged, and handled safely and consistently. It's like a checklist of what you must do to protect product quality and consumer safety
Key Points of GPP:
Clean & Sanitary Facilities:
The production space must be clean, organized, and built in a way that prevents contamination (e.g., dust, mold, pests).
Proper Equipment & Maintenance:
Equipment must be clean, well-maintained, and used correctly.
Staff Hygiene & Training:
Workers must wear clean PPE (like gloves, hairnets, lab coats) and follow hygiene rules. They also need training on their tasks and GPP.Written instructions for every important task (like drying, packaging, sanitation) to make sure it's done the same safe way every time.Everything must be recorded--what was done, when, and by whom--to track and prove compliance.Cannabis must be tested to ensure it meets limits for things like THC/CBD, microbes, heavy metals, and pesticides.Must be done in clean conditions with correct info (like THC %, warnings, expiry, etc.).Cannabis must be stored and shipped in a way that protects it from contamination, damage, or loss of qualityIn short, GPP makes sure cannabis is made in a safe, clean, and controlled environment--protecting both the product and the consumer.
