For the past 85 years, Kawartha Dairy has been proud to be a 100% Canadian-owned company, still operated by the same family that founded it in 1937. Although the company has grown tremendously from its early days, it remains headquartered in the lakeside community of Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where it was founded, near Peterborough, an hour north of the GTA.
Today Kawartha Dairy operates 10 retail stores and services a wide range of customers, from grocery stores to foodservice establishments and of course, ice cream parlours.
Reflecting the explosive growth in the brand and the business as a whole, Kawartha Dairy has recently constructed a 54,000-square-foot warehouse just south of Bobcaygeon to serve its provincial operations. Investments are also underway to modernize the production plant, our systems and our infrastructure.
As the Quality Assurance Technician reporting to the Quality Assurance Supervisor, your goal in this position will be to direct examination of product to ensure that quality standards and procedures are met and aligned with legislation and customer specifications. Requiring a high level of attention to detail, the Quality Assurance Technician is responsible for strictly adhering to the company\xe2\x80\x99s quality assurance policies, and identifying defects to prevent these products from entering the supply chain.

What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Do:
Support overnight Sanitation and Production activities; schedule includes weekends; there are future opportunities for rotational shifts.

Conduct standardized tests on food and beverages to ensure compliance to standards
  • Factors considered are microbiological, physical, and chemical composition
  • Products included in testing are fluid milk and creams, soft serve ice cream mix, yoghurt mix, frozen desserts, and incoming ingredients.

Evaluate retained product samples on organoleptic properties to verify shelf life
  • Taste or smell food and or beverages to ensure flavor meets specifications
  • Taste or smell food and or beverages to ensure specific characteristics on select samples
  • Microbiological testing as required

Provide ongoing monitoring of production processes
  • Monitor quality considerations for processes involved in both fluid production and ice cream production
  • Liaise regularly and maintain working relationships with various on-site groups (e.g. production personnel)
  • Assists the QA Supervisor/Manager with supporting the facility\xe2\x80\x99s HACCP Program to meet corporate food safety strategy and quality standards
  • Provides recommendations to improve the facility\xe2\x80\x99s quality system based on analysis of data relative to food safety and quality performance
  • Promotes a quality culture among all personnel. Provides HACCP, GMP and other training as per company quality manual to all personnel.

Interpret test results and document or record information
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store or maintain information in hard copy or electronic means
  • Record and compile test results and prepare graphs, charts, and reports
  • Assists Quality Supervisor/Manager with developing the company\xe2\x80\x99s quality assurance procedures and writing SOPs

Environmental Monitoring
  • Microbiological testing
  • Walk through inspections

What You Need to Get the Job Done:
  • University Degree in Science (Food Science Preferred) or Diploma, Food and Pharmaceutical Technology or related discipline
  • A minimum of 2 years lab experience in the food and beverage industry and with GMP and HACCP Programs
  • Knowledge of quality assurance audits
  • Knowledge of quality improvement testing
  • Must be capable of working evening and weekends in response to production times and business needs as applicable
