SEM-Hatch is a joint venture between Hatch Ltd. and Sikumiut Environmental Management Ltd. providing engineering, construction and project management services in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. SEM-Hatch is performing Engineering and Project Management Services for the Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion project. This mine expansion project is expected to produce about 40,000 tonnes of nickel per year and extend the life of the Voisey's Bay operation until at least 2032.

The Quality Assurance (QA) engineering student will undertake the duties required to assist the overall quality activities for the Voisey's Bay Mine Expansion Project. Specifically, the student will work closely with Commissioning, Construction, Engineering, Expediting, Logistics, and Procurement team to help with overall Quality activities to meet our execution schedule. This is a site project term position on a 2 week in 2 weeks out rotation, with 12 hour long shifts. The site is accessed via air from designated pick-up points in Newfoundland and Labrador. The QA engineering student will provide technical support for the field engineering team. This co-op position will be based at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site for a Winter 2023 academic term (3-4 months).

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and track offsite inspection activities and schedules;
  • Review Construction Turnover Package and Vendor Documentation;
  • Provide technical support to the Quality team to meet Quality deliverables;
  • Provide technical support to the contractors in their respective discipline and assess the quality of the work in the field;
  • Provide support to construction to meet turnover requirements;
  • Provide technical support for preparation of construction deliverables such as check sheets, drawings, and turnover packages;
  • Participate in technical proposal evaluation during procurement process;
  • Plan and implement work in a manner that promotes a safe working environment and ensures that adverse environmental effects are minimized;
  • Provide support for ensuring engineering codes, specifications, standards, and guidelines are implemented.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Currently enrolled in a Cooperative Engineering program;
  • Experience in a construction environment would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience in Windows based applications and Microsoft Excel is essential;
  • Organizational, interpersonal communications skills, strong analytical and problem solving skills and a proven safety record are essential.
