Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, operational, credit, pension, insurance, compliance, regulatory, market, reputation and geopolitical risks. About the role: This is a retail credit quality assurance role which undertakes the function of risk-based monitoring and random testing of credit applications. This role will conduct testing of processes and outcomes of First Line of Defence (1LoD) in Retail Underwriting, Branch credit related activities, and Back Office Credit related processes. These activities will provide assurance that the business is operating in-line with relevant laws, regulations, principles, and HSBC Group standards and policies and to ensure that HSBC maintains effective retail credit controls. The role will also perform deep-dive and thematic reviews on emerging issues. All these reviews may result in opportunities to determine if procedural and/or strategic changes are needed. The role may also be asked to conduct activities which assist the bank in testing Risk Appetite metrics. Findings will need to be presented to management and the role must have strong written and communication skills. The geographical area of interest is for this work is the HSBC Canada residential real estate credit portfolio Responsibilities:

  • Review of credit processes, determining testable points of failure, and detecting processes that can lead to credit, and operational loss.
  • Conduct quality control activities for mortgages and Home Equity lines of credit (HELOCS), and may also involve some Investment Secured, and Partner Capital Loans, and/or unsecured lending. This will Include in-depth reviews of credit, compliance, process monitoring of operations in the originations, servicing areas to determine credit quality and compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies and Company policies and procedures. Identify trends or procedural and policy weakness and/or inconsistencies. Quality control activities will include ensuring the bank has high quality collateral, collateral documentation is strong, and credit decisions are appropriately made.
  • Carrying out thorough preparation and high-quality reviews of First Line of Defence (1LoD) controls
  • Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with key stakeholders including keeping abreast of key business, regulatory and industry developments and any changes to procedures and practices.
  • Supporting the preparation of compliance risk assessments, by reviewing credit policy, lending guidelines, and credit processes with the active participation of senior managers in the Business.
  • Review secured and unsecured credit losses to identify possible policy or program changes, training, fraud detection, and other risk factors that need changing.
  • Tracking and following-up actions identified as a result of monitoring and review work and escalate when necessary
  • Design, and preparation of consolidated MI on the results of monitoring for senior managers in the Business.
  • Work with policy and implementation teams in the design of credit processes that support policy changes. This may result in new monitoring and controls.
  • Preparing reports to inform key stakeholders of the outcome of monitoring and review work, including rating findings and assigning owners/actions.
  • Deliver fair outcomes for our customers and ensure own conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.
  • Work together with other monitoring specialists in risk assessments, and reviews.
  • Work with an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices. Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC Brand.
  • Monitor and review adjudication activities. Specifically, that credit decisions are in compliance with policy, lending guidelines, and that exceptions are appropriate.
  • Provide in-depth knowledge in the design of adjudication system changes to ensure high quality system decisions are made.
  • Provide in-depth knowledge, working with vendors to ensure appraisal quality by design of new or more efficient appraisal rules, and in the design and monitoring of security documentation fulfillment.
  • May assist in the conduct of annual review of key vendors (document fulfilment, and appraisal management) and provide due diligence assessments for executive review.
  • Role will assist, Management Self Identified Issues and gap closures.
  • Ensure all employees are aware of and effectively identify and manage applicable money laundering (ML), terrorist financing (TF), sanctions and reputational risks.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned

Requirements
  • Canadian university undergraduate in Business related degree, or engineering
  • Strong written, and oral communication skills.
  • Curious problem solver.
  • Attention to detail

The following are good to have but we are willing to teach the right candidate
  • Experience or knowledge of credit underwriting or credit policy design.
  • Experience or knowledge of credit audit practices, or underwriting reviews.
  • Experience or knowledge of branch operations as they relate to secured retail credit application taking.
  • Experience or knowledge of retail compliance activities as they relate to secured retail credit.
  • A general understanding or retail real estate appraisals would be an asset.
  • An understanding of back-office compliance process as they relate to secured retail credit would be an asset.
  • A background in the design of retail processes would be an asset.
