Position Overview



The Pyrolysis Technician will support experimental operations focused on biomass thermochemical conversion. This role involves operating, maintaining, and optimizing lab-scale pyrolysis to produce intermediates for downstream processing. The technician will work closely with scientists and engineers to execute experiments, collect data, ensure safety compliance, and support technology development and scale-up.

This position is ideal for a hands-on candidate with strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and interest in sustainable chemistry and process development.

Key Responsibilities



Operate lab scale pyrolysis system. Prepare and preprocess biomass feedstocks; measure, record, and track input material properties. Monitor reaction conditions (temperature, pressure, flow rate) in real-time; adjust operating parameters as directed. Collect, separate, and store pyrolysis outputs (bio-oils, aqueous phases, biochar, gases). Perform sample preparation for chemical analysis (GC-MS, HPLC, ICP, etc.). Maintain detailed batch records, log sheets, and data entries. Conduct routine equipment maintenance and troubleshoot system issues. Install, calibrate, and verify sensors, gauges, and ancillary equipment. Follow environmental, health, and safety (EHS) procedures and maintain proper chemical/flammable handling. Assist development and improvement of SOPs and operational workflows. Work collaboratively across cross-functional technical teams supporting R&D and scale-up.

Qualifications



Required



Technical diploma or B.Sc. in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or related discipline; or equivalent experience. Hands-on experience with pyrolysis systems, industrial equipment, or lab instrumentation. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot hardware systems. Comfortable working around high-temperature & pressurized systems. Strong organizational and record-keeping skills. Willingness to work flexible hours based on operational needs. Familiarity with biomass processing and characterization. Experience with GC-MS, HPLC, or other analytical tools. WHMIS, TDG, or equivalent safety training.

Pay: From $38,000.00 per year
