POSITION FUNCTION
Respond to emergency call-outs, perform Garbally Yard and job site security; operate the Johnson Street Bridge; perform traffic control functions and assist in special events.

KEY DUTIES
  • Provide after hours response to complaints received from call centre; clear plugged catch basins, sewer and drain laterals using manual rods or other means; realign steel road plates; investigate complaints such as broken or damaged services, mains, fire hydrants, irrigation systems, street lights, traffic signals, signs, posts; shut off water leaks or make areas safe and notify appropriate supervisor of action required; remove debris such as broken tree limbs, glass and gravel from roads and sidewalks; apply salt or other chemicals to remove ice and snow from roads or sidewalks; remove debris from roads as a result of motor vehicle accidents and apply absorbents for fluid spills maintain record of complaints received, including photos and documentation for incident report; complete daily time sheets and equipment use logs.
  • Lock and unlock gates and doors as required; monitor the yard, buildings and various work sites to ensure site safety and security; clean and maintain yard; deliver, set up and remove barricades and other traffic control devices as required. Assist in special event preparation by delivering supplies, designating parking areas; arranging for towing of illegally parked vehicles during events.
  • Respond to calls from Police Department to remove abandoned personal items such as back packs and shopping carts from sidewalks and camping areas; respond to calls from Fire Department to assist with tasks such as boarding up windows in burned buildings.
  • Raise and lower the Johnson Street Bridge according to standing orders and regulations to permit the passage of marine traffic; operate radio or cellular telephone to contact marine traffic to schedule bridge lifts; control vehicular, rail and pedestrian traffic by operating gates, lights and warning devices; ensure bridge surface clear of hazards for pedestrian traffic; use bridge emergency procedures and standby engines as required.
  • Operate a variety of City trucks for responding to various call outs; perform pre- and post trip inspections of emergency items such items as keys, cell phone and water works plans; use various hand tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and hammers.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.


INDEPENDENCE
Work is performed according to established routine, assigned by supervisor or received through public complaints or requests for service.
Work is reviewed daily, verbally or through written reports.
Problems such as broken utilities and infrastructure or park use permit concerns are referred to appropriate supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Understand techniques and practices of the City water, drain, sewer and road system.
  • Understand and apply service requirements for small construction equipment.
  • Operate a cantilever bridge.
  • Operate a service truck equipped with crane, snow plow or sanding attachment.
  • Assess emergency situations and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
  • Work and operate equipment safely.


QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
  • High school graduation.
  • Valid Traffic Control Person Certification. (16 hours)
  • Snow and Ice Control Certification. (12 hours).
  • Current and valid Class 5 BC Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence.

Experience:
2 years related experience including practical experience or training in water works, sewer and drain systems.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.

Work schedule: Shifts may vary, 40-hour work week
$34.78 per hour, Pay Grade 8
