Working as a Communications Officer for the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is motivating and rewarding. In order to succeed in this role, you will need to collaborate with EPS' high-performing teams, show initiative, and demonstrate excellent verbal and written communications skills.
The EPS is recruiting for one (1) temporary, full-time position (ending Nov 6, 2026) within the Public Affairs Unit. The Communications Officer would report to the Director of Media Relations & Public Affairs and will have duties that include:
Researching, writing and distributing communications products to internal audiences.
o This includes feature stories, presentations, marketing/communications plans, speeches and fact sheets. Developing advertising material to satisfy communication goals, while managing the development of ads and placement of media buys.
Responding to internal inquiries and providing communications/public relations support through project coordination, promotion and storytelling through various mediums.
Assisting senior communications colleagues within Corporate Communications Branch with planning, managing and executing internal and external special events.
Working collaboratively with external service providers, such as graphic designers and printing services, to deliver clear and effective communications products.
Developing and coordinating content for the intranet, external website and social media platforms (X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).
Occasionally supporting the Media Relations Unit to prepare spokespersons for interviews, by conducting background research, drafting backgrounders and key messages for briefings.
Performing other related corporate communications assignments.
Qualifications
:University Degree or Diploma in Communications, Public Relations or related discipline AND a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in a designated Public Relations, Public Affairs or professional communications position.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience writing stories, communications plans, advertising copy, social media, supported by a portfolio of previous work. Knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) style guide is preferred.
Demonstrated experience in developing marketing strategies, including coordinating media buys, performing market research, media monitoring and analytics.
Experience developing content for websites and social media platforms (X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn).
Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and consistently meet deadlines.
Must be a team player who is able to multi-task in a busy environment, while remaining calm and professional.
Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is considered an asset.
Previous communications experience in a law enforcement or emergency management environment would also be considered an asset.
Hours of Work:
33.75 hours per week, anytime between 0700 - 1700 hours, Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable-hour of work program.
The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
