The STBBI Program requires a self-directed and enthusiastic individual to work within a collaborative team environment to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards - Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted/Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) Prevention and Control Protocol, 2019.
Team Specific Responsibilities:
Investigate reports and complete case and contact management of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections
Work in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary, sexual health clinic setting using critical thinking and exceptional team work to deliver excellent, inclusive customer service
Provide counselling and education on health promotion, disease prevention and public health interventions including STBBI prevention, birth control and pregnancy options, sexuality, immunization and harm reduction
Interventions practicing under the authority of medical directives such as performing venipuncture and specimen collection for the purpose of STI testing, provision and dispensing of medication for birth control, Plan B emergency contraception and STI treatment including the provision of injections
Work collaboratively with team members, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, problem solving, effective communication and continuous quality improvement, to meet the operational needs of the program and our clients
Work collaboratively with other health professionals and agencies (e.g. physicians, local hospitals and community health agencies) to facilitate the provision of counselling and appropriate treatment for sexually transmitted infections
Work competently and compassionately with individuals that may be vulnerable or marginalized including but not limited to youth, members of 2SLGBTI+ communities, individuals that are street involved or homeless, racialized individuals, Indigenous peoples, people with lived experience with substances, people who are engaged in sex work or have been victims of human trafficking
Documentation and data entry in electronic medical records (Telus CHR) and SharePoint documentation system and reporting to the MOHLTC through iPHIS
Team Specific Requirements:
Minimum one year of STBBI case and contact management (preferred) or 2-3 years of non-COVID communicable disease case management
Clinical nursing experience in a sexual health clinic for a minimum of 6 months (preferred)
Lived or worked experience with 2SLGBTQ+ communities and an understanding of the impacts on health that disproportionately effect these individuals would be an asset
Experience working with victims and survivors of human sex trafficking and/or sexual assault
Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
Effective written and oral communication skills; bilingual preferred
Current BLS is a requirement for Public Health Nurses in the Communicable Diseases Division
Candidate will be required to regularly travel in the community and to clinics across the Region of Peel. Candidate is required to have a G class driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
What you will do in this role:
Apply knowledge regarding concepts of population health status, inequities in health, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
Utilize research and evidence and apply critical appraisal skills to inform policies, programs and practice
Provide health information, teaching and counselling to clients
Use a holistic approach to assess the health status and functional competence of clients with consideration of the impact of the determinants of health
Identify and analyze how clients' culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about health influence interventions
Establish mutually determined goals with client, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and community assessment skills
Participate in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of community wide and site-specific public health strategies using Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM)
Advocate for and contribute to the development of healthy public policy
Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps in order to achieve improved health outcomes
Develop, foster and facilitate inter-sectoral partnerships and networks using team building, negotiation, conflict management and group facilitation
Demonstrate culturally sensitive approaches and strategies with diverse populations
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
Promote awareness of the Region of Peel and Public Health services
Participate in research, quality assurance initiatives, and mentor-ship opportunities as appropriate
Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards and principles
Fulfill legal and professional obligations and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation and departmental policies, procedures and medical directives/acts as an ambassador for the Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing
Perform other duties as assigned which support the organizational goals
Respond to public health emergencies, significant events and incidents as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Emergency Standards
What the role requires:
A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent recognized by a Canadian University
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
Current certification in BLS is required for all PHNs in the CD Division
Experience in public health or community health nursing preferred

Assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills
Relevant computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, iPHIS, Telus Client Health Record and SharePoint) and the ability to work with databases

Effective organizational and time management skills
Ability to apply appropriate theory and learning principles to practice
Knowledge of Peel's diverse community and associated health impacts
Travel in the community and to clinics across the Region of Peel
Work in office and within the Regional Healthy Sexuality Clinics. Staff can anticipate being on site up to 5 days/week as needed to fulfill duties such as case management, medication preparation, home visits, and working in the Healthy Sexuality Clinics
Work Mode & Job Location:
at 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, along with the ability to work remotely. Please note: some positions do require the ability to travel to various sites in the Region of Peel (Mississauga, Brampton & Caledon) for home visits, ROP clinics and other community partners.
Hours of work:
Monday to Friday 8:30AM - 8:30PM availability is required (as per the Collective Agreement)
