What you will be doing

Communicates fire and life safety messages with the public and assists in the delivery of public education programs;

Performs public relations, liaises and collaborates with other city divisions, partner agencies and community organizations;

Creates, maintains & updates social media messaging, platforms, content, websites etc.;

Develop targeted messaging, video's, programs, media information and lessons for public education for internal/external personnel;

Create and deliver department approved targeted public education programs and activities for target groups and others requesting public education services;

Creation of new educational programs and activities where and when required and/or maintain an excellent and productive working relationship with, but not limited to: Boards of Education, private schools, member of community groups, members of culturally diverse groups, Fire Suppression personnel;

Assisting with the analysis of data & statistics and using results to develop standards, long range planning strategies, educational programs, material, and activities in support of community fire and life safety;

Establish and maintain partnerships and sponsorships with other municipal/provincial government and non-governmental agencies in support of fire prevention, education, and compliance activities;

Spokesperson to media outlets for matters of public interest in respect to fire & life safety education;

Prepare and supervise the production of publicity brochures, handouts, direct mail leaflets, promotional videos and coordinating photo opportunities;

Assist with fire evacuation planning and drills and participate in community functions to promote fire/life safety;

Delivers internal training to raise awareness to department personnel on public education;

Performs administration duties;

Maintains professional competency;

Required to attend, and successfully complete, any training required by the Fire Chief or designate which may be internal, off site or out of City;

Performs after-hours public education activities, as required; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Post-Secondary graduation from a university, technical or community college in Fire Protection, Fire Inspection, Fire Safety Education or an equivalent combination/related field of experience, training and knowledge to competently perform all aspects of this job.The Fire Chief will determine equivalency for candidates. Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License (minimum Class "G") with a clean driver's abstract. Must be proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), Telestaff, Twitter, Amanda, the Internet and the ability to develop proficiency in other corporate solutions; The Public Fire & Life Safety Educator must also be certified in: + National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1035 - Fire and Life Safety Educator Levels I and II and Public Information Officer (PIO)
Technical training & experience in computer programming, software application. One to three years of experience in development and delivery of presentations, training and public speaking. Must provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively. Excellent interpersonal skills are required with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, internal and external clients. Current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification in NFPA 1031 - Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Level I with the supplemental courses prescribed by the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) including, Part 2,6 & 9 of the Ontario Fire Code, Courtroom procedures, Legislation and NFPA 472 Awareness; Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code Act and regulation considered an asset. For example, possess a Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) with qualifications in Part 3 Fire Protection, Occupant Safety and Accessibility; and Education/Training in Social Media Marketing, Public Relations, Computer Technology NFPA 921/1033 Fire and Explosion Investigator course



We actively seek candidates who possess the knowledge, skills and abilities that are over and above our minimum requirements.



Additional courses, education or training that are related to fire, public education, fire prevention or emergency services would be considered definite assets. These include post-secondary education, trades qualifications, civil engineering programs, architectural programs or fire protection engineering programs. We value skills or experiences such as previous firefighting, teaching, inspection, plans examination or emergency service experience, coaching and volunteer work. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team, environment are very important.

Your compensation

This position has an annual salary range of $64,036 (55% of 1st Class Fire Fighter Rate) to $125,744 (108% of 1st Class Fire Fighter Rate) (2025 Rates).

Hours of work

This position requires working a 4-day compressed work week (10-hour shifts), either Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday. Emergency Call-In is a requirement of this position.
