Position Purpose Summary:

This position will work within our community family services, by picking up donations of food for the food bank. They will also oversee the day-to-day maintenance of all of our buildings.

This is a permanent part time position at 15 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 3 hours per day.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Driving and Loading (80%)
  • Ensures the safe and careful handling of all pickups and deliveries using an assigned Salvation Army vehicle in a timely and secure manner.
  • Loads and unloads goods at designated facilities.
  • Communicates with the public in respectful and pleasant manner.
  • Picks up supplies or runs any errands for the office as necessary.
  • Performs circle checks of vehicle, checking air, water, oil, and other items to ensure equipment is in good working condition. Maintains program vehicle log and report any problems.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records (mileage, fuel costs, issues encountered).
  • Responsible for the security and safe operation of the vehicle and other assigned equipment.
  • Ensures that program vehicle is clean with all personal items removed daily.
  • Cleans and sanitizes supplies and equipment used.
  • Maintains knowledge of legislative and organization policies such as health and safety regulations/policies, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts
  • Safely operates all assigned company vehicles and related equipment.
  • Ensures the external property is in a safe and clean condition, in all seasons, for pedestrians and vehicles, by removing snow and ice from sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
General Maintenance (20%)
  • Completes assigned facility work orders for basic repairs, maintenance, and preventative tasks in a timely and thorough manner, within the skillset of the incumbent.
  • Completes regular reviews of the condition of the facility, on a timely basis, in conjunction with the supervisor.
  • Conducts required readings on heating systems, including logging pertinent data in logbooks, in conjunction with the supervisor, per schedules.
  • Resolves minor troubleshooting of building systems.
  • Completes adjustments and required repairs, as assigned or by following instructions, to The Salvation Army standards and in accordance with maintenance procedures.
  • Cleans, maintains, and services equipment and tools; performs maintenance on small engines; ensures proper storage.
  • As assigned by Supervisor, organizes, and maintains supplies required for site operation; takes inventory count.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • It is a part-time position. Flexible schedule with some work during evenings and weekends can be expected.
  • Work is typically performed in a vehicle or inside the building with exposure to various odours, dust, and monotony of work (repetitive tasks).
  • Duties involve being outside of the building in summer/winter time.
  • May on occasion be required to lift/move/transport weights of up to 40lbs with no assistance from others.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Grade 12 or Equivalent
  • Drivers\' License and clear Driver\'s Abstract is required
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • More than 1 year of driving and loading experience.
  • Previous experience of building maintenance will be considered as a strong asset.

  • Proven attention to detail and the ability to follow legislation, directions, policies, procedures, and well-defined steps.
  • Ability to adopt a flexible work schedule during peak and/or seasonal times (e.g., work weekends/evenings during special events).
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs in accordance with standard practices for safe lifting, hauling and securing of loads.
  • Ability to provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service.
  • Good verbal and written skills.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
