Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.


The Director of the Forensic Assessment Programs is currently seeking a dedicated full-time Psychologist. The purpose of the position is to plan, conduct and supervise psychological services in a psychiatric hospital in both the inpatient hospital (regional and forensics) and outpatient settings, and to plan, co-ordinate and provide related research and program evaluation projects, and educational and training services.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Perform clinical duties including: screening, planning, and conducting evidence-based assessments including psychopathology, personality, cognitive, neuropsychological screening, diagnosis, or diagnostic clarification; administering, evaluating and interpreting a range of psychological tests and findings; monitoring and revising treatment programs; preparing psychological reports as required; and providing individual and group therapy sessions. Facilitate patient psychosocial rehabilitation by providing consultations and education to those involved in rehabilitation and reintegration of patients into the community; liaising with other care providers; assessing patients to resolve emergencies or determine need for referral to other professionals/agencies. Provide leadership, consultation and advice to members of the interdisciplinary teams on conducting, developing and evaluating effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitative activities and recommending new approaches to client care using shared-decision making, collaborative case formulation, system navigation support, etc. Contributing to evaluation of overall program effectiveness for planning purposes. Organize and conduct research, program evaluation, data-informed decision-making, continuous quality improvement, and professionally-relevant projects and scholarly activities; disseminating findings through seminars, publications, conferences, lectures or workshops; collaborating with system partners; using data dashboards and/or outcome tools; and providing research advice and guidance to management and professional staff regarding the investigation of clinical problems. Provide professional supervision to psychometrists and those on temporary registrar with the Ontario College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario, and practicum and/or research students. Maintain confidentiality of patient files and security of testing equipment. Make recommendations to the Clinical Manager and/or Director regarding psychology budget requirements (e.g., purchase of psychometric instruments, books, assessment manuals, treatment manuals, training materials, etc.) and managing allotted psychology budget within established guidelines. Serve on administrative, clinical and community committees as assigned, identified and/or approved. Take leadership role in quality improvement and/or clinical innovation in alignment with the goals and scope of the clinical program (e.g., co-designing new pathways, etc.). Use digital tools for therapy, supervision, and documentation (e.g., EHR, telepsych platforms, etc.). Conduct evidence-based assessments for the Courts and the Ontario Review Board to address various psycholegal questions, including but not limited to risk of recidivism, criminal responsibility, and fitness to stand trial. Attend at and provide evidence to the Courts, Ontario Review Board, and tribunals as required. Ensure all psychological services provided are in keeping with current best practices for the management of forensic psychiatric patients.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Registration as a Psychologist with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario with competencies relevant to the position (e.g. Psychologists working in forensics must have competency in clinical and forensic psychology). Bilingual proficiency in English and French Proven experience in the science and practices of psychology including a full range of psychotherapeutic and assessment techniques to plan, conduct and coordinate psychological services, apply complex treatment techniques and provide consultation and advice on diagnosis and treatment of patients, including CBT and its application for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, concurrent disorders and complex presentations, and in work with marginalized populations. Experience in Psychological research, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement methodologies, including statistical analyses to conduct and supervise relevant projects and write research papers. Independently planning, conducting and leading research projects or investigations that are carried out within program policies/procedures and/or budgetary limits. Ability to adhere and follow applicable professional and ethical standards, as well as provincial/federal statutes relating to the practice of psychology. Knowledge of community resources and services to make appropriate referrals and/or to advocate for patient rehabilitation and integration into the community. Ability to use computer software and equipment in order to produce documents, analyze program evaluation, continuous quality improvement and/or data, and produce relevant reports. Digital literacy, including EHRs, virtual platforms, and/or outcome measurement tools. Experience with adult education principles and contemporary training approaches, with the ability to design and deliver effective learning experiences tailored to diverse adult learners. Knowledge of Trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and equity-based care principles, and best practice advocacy skills for professional and systems issues. Proven analytical skills to determine the most appropriate diagnostic approach to provide diagnostic assessments based on the interpretation of tests, interviews and other methods; to formulate and implement treatment and rehabilitation programs; to plan and conduct research projects and write research findings which are subject to academic critiques; and to evaluate the efficacy of treatment and rehabilitative activities or programs, and to identify effective solutions. Verbal and written communication skills to communicate information regarding assessment approaches/findings and treatment/rehabilitative activities. This includes the use of specialized technical terminology and the ability to express complex findings and ideas in clear terms when communicating research results in publications or conferences/lectures, and the ability to engage in clear communication with diverse populations, including those with cognitive or language barriers. Interpersonal skills to maintain strong working relationships with interdisciplinary staff and staff of all care providers to cooperatively develop and implement treatment plans and in communicating diagnosis in a discreet and sensitive manner. Ability to work in accordance with program policies/guidelines/operational plans and the professional standards governing the practice of psychology. Knowledge of evidence-based forensic assessment and theory. Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada as it pertains to patients with a mental health diagnosis. Familiarity with a wide range of forensic assessment tools, and best practices in the management of forensic psychiatry patients.
