Job Description


An opening currently exists for a Protection and Control (P&C) Engineer in the Engineering Standards & Support Team, within the Project Development - Engineering Department. The P&C Engineer will be a key member of the Engineering Standards & Support team responsible for managing a wide range of P&C related assets. The successful candidate will be accountable to work with other technical staff to maintain AltaLink’s Area Protection Coordination study. In addition, they will develop and update P&C engineering standards to facilitate the adoption of new technologies, provide cost-saving opportunities, and ensure compliance to industry standards and practices. Under the supervision of the Manager - Engineering Standards & Support, and the technical direction of the Principal Engineer - Protection and Control, this position will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to utilize and further develop their technical skills in the area of power system protection and control.
Responsibilities:

  • Provide support on AltaLink’s wide-area protection study.
  • Support all aspects of area protection studies as required, including resourcing, budgeting, estimating, scheduling, scoping, quality assurance, automation development, technical work, and reporting.
  • Provide engineering review of protection coordination study activities completed by engineering consultants.
  • Support the maintenance of the AltaLink operational short circuit model through continuous system changes, including coordination of updates with multiple interconnected third parties.
  • Develop and review P&C standards including the preparation of drawing templates, application standards, setting guidelines, as well as training of design and field staff in the application of P&C standards.
  • Maintain the P&C material item catalog (MIC) for parts used in standard designs.
  • Carry out market research, prepare technical specifications, perform evaluation testing and make recommendations for new P&C equipment.
  • Provide support in the management of protection simulation software (CAPE), relay setting databases, and analysis programs.
  • Support the training and mentoring of other AltaLink departments and contractors for issues related to Protection and Control applications.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in utility protection and control design, application, settings, installation, testing, maintenance and/or operations.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Experience using short-circuit modeling software including CAPE would be an asset.
  • Previous involvement in area protection coordination studies would be an asset.
  • Experience in developing P&C standards/technical specifications and firmware verification testing procedures.
  • Technical understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design.
  • Familiar with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships and to promote positive customer outcomes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of issues.
  • Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
