Job Summary
The Adaptive Seating Technician oversees the technical side of the Seating Services and is responsible for managing a technical caseload. In this position, the Seating Technician will collaborate with the interdisciplinary Seating Team members in the evaluation, prescription design and fabrication of simple and complex seating systems and adaptive equipment to promote independence and quality of life for persons with physical disabilities. Work includes fabricating or supervising the fabrication of an insert, complex seating system, or Activities of Daily Living (ADL) equipment; ensuring the daily operation of the adaptive seating department and laboratory through logistics and documentation, inventory/stock orders, lab and machine maintenance and workload management; researching and developing new technologies, techniques, materials and processes for the highly specialized area of adaptive seating; providing expert advice to occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other professionals within the hospital and the community in the specialized area of adaptive seating; supervising and training prosthetic/orthotic technicians levels I,II,III, or IV, in the specialized area of adaptive seating design, fabrication, and fitting, supervising summer volunteers and work term students and performing other related duties as required.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Occasionally lifts materials weighing between 25 and 50 lbs. and regularly works with plaster casts which can be quite heavy. Many of the items are awkwardly shaped making lifting and moving difficult.
Constantly standing using hand tools requiring accurate control, steadiness and movement to fabricate devices, mold and shape objects.
Regularly uses gross and fine motor skills to lift and assemble wheelchair components.
Visual concentration includes using machinery such as a band saw, ensuring proper measurements and proper alignment of all devices. Repetition requiring alertness occurs when sewing with an industrial sewing machine or when grinding materials. Knives are frequently used which requires concentration to avoid injury. Works with students or volunteers observing their use of fabrication machinery, therefore attention is critical.

Job Qualifications
Successful completion of formal training in Prosthetics and Orthotics from a recognized Prosthetics and Orthotics Technical College Program or equivalent as determined by the employer is required.
Minimum of three years of experience within the last five in Prosthetics and Orthotics or in an adaptive seating facility is required.
Experience working with various materials, including wood, metal, thermoplastics and temperate foams, as required in various seating systems is required.
Demonstrated strong technical skills.
Demonstrated strong communication skills.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.

The applicant must possess post-secondary education and experience in repairing and maintaining equipment such as wheelchairs or experience working with various materials, including wood, metal, thermoplastics and temperate foams. During the training, the successful applicant will be paid at the salary scale associated with his/her current classification or as a Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician II depending on the level of education and experience possessed. The applicant must successfully complete the training within the prescribed timeframe. Once completed, s/he will be appointed to a Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician IV B (Seating) position and be paid at that rate. Any financial costs associated with the training will be covered by the employer.
