Position Overview

The

Property Maintenance Steward

cares for Emmanuel's indoor and outdoor environments across both the Waterloo and Baden locations. This role ensures that all spaces are safe, functional, and welcoming, reflecting Emmanuel's commitment to community, nature, and land stewardship.

The Steward is responsible for hands-on maintenance, repairs, and seasonal outdoor tasks, while also supporting the upkeep of gardens, play areas, and shared spaces. Working collaboratively with the team, the Steward helps maintain the integrity and beauty of our learning environments and may assist with property needs related to rentals or special events.

The ideal candidate is proactive, organized, and takes pride in nurturing spaces that support the wellbeing of children, families, and educators.

Key Responsibilities

General Maintenance & Repairs

Perform small repairs including basic carpentry, painting, wall patching, tightening furniture, and minor plumbing or electrical fixes (e.g., changing light bulbs, unblocking toilets). Coordinate and oversee external contractors for specialized or larger repairs. Document and track all repairs, inspections, and maintenance tasks for both locations. Report major repair needs or safety concerns promptly to the Executive Director or designate. Lift and move furniture (tables, chairs, shelving, etc.) as needed to support classroom or event setup. Conduct deeper cleaning tasks during non-peak periods, such as carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance.
Water Testing & Compliance

Complete monthly and annual water testing as required by the Ministry of Education and public health. Maintain accurate records and submit results as needed. Manage and order water softener salt and ensure systems are maintained.
Outdoor & Grounds Upkeep

Maintain outdoor play areas by refilling sandboxes, mulching, watering plants, and general gardening tasks. Install and remove seasonal items such as shade sails and outdoor water hookups. Ensure external property is well-maintained, including the upkeep of storage sheds and outdoor signage. Change the outdoor sign when needed. Support the setup and tear down for outdoor programs and rentals. Align outdoor maintenance with the organization's Forest and Nature School and land-based learning philosophy.
Facilities Rentals

Oversee and coordinate potential future rentals of both Emmanuel locations. Prepare, inspect, and maintain rental spaces to ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness for use. Conduct post-rental checks and return spaces to program-ready condition.
Supplies & Inventory

Monitor and maintain stock of frequently used maintenance and cleaning items (e.g., brooms, light bulbs, paper products, supplies). Order or purchase replacement items as required. Ensure tools and equipment are kept organized and in good working order.
Health, Safety & Compliance

Report and address potential safety hazards immediately. Comply with all sanitation and building disinfecting protocols. Support compliance with health, safety, and licensing standards. Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance documentation.
Qualifications

Previous experience in facilities, building maintenance, or property management. Working knowledge of building systems, carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical work. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to perform physical work and outdoor tasks in all weather conditions. Access to a reliable truck or vehicle for transportation of tools and materials between sites. Valid driver's license (required). Up-to-date immunizations as required by the Ministry of Education. Clear Vulnerable Sector Check (required prior to start date). Experience working in a child care, educational, or not-for-profit environment is an asset.
Work Environment

This position includes both indoor and outdoor work across two sites:

Emmanuel at Brighton (Waterloo) Emmanuel at Sandhills (Baden) with office space at this location
The Property Steward will work closely with the leadership team and educators to maintain safe, functional, and inspiring spaces that support children's exploration and learning.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: $22.00-$25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 - 30 per week
