GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Property & Exhibit Technician is responsible for providing and maintaining continuity of all exhibits and property seized or recovered by the RCMP. This involves the tracking, handling, storage, returns, preparation for auction, and disposal of all property logged with the Exhibit Room.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receive, store, and ensure accuracy all incoming, recovered, lost, or found property.
  • Conduct enquiries to locate owners within various databases and contact owners to facilitate/schedule the return of property, coordinating with the front counter member for pick-ups.
  • Perform PROS and CPIC maintenance as required.
  • Provide assistance and support to detachment staff in the processing, storage, and shipping of exhibits to various locations.
  • Examine each exhibit for completeness, accuracy of information, exhibit integrity, and security.
  • Ensure exhibit processes and procedures are being adhered to by everyone.
  • Upon receipt of exhibits, implement proper method of storage for all materials (i.e. gasoline, explosive, biohazards, firearms, etc.) as per pre-established procedures and any applicable legislation.
  • Prepare all items for proper disposal in accordance with any applicable legislation and procedures.
  • Review files to determine the proper administration of exhibits disposition.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of proper procedures for detachment staff.
  • Remain current on related policies and make recommendations for changes to procedures and processes (unit supplements).
  • Custody and control of large sums of currency, including all forms required for bank deposits.
  • Ensure firearms are safely stored and processed.
  • Monitor exhibit diary dates to ensure that all processes and procedures are adhered to.
  • Provide assistance to other units as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Familiarity working with and following various policies, procedures, and legislation applicable to exhibits.
  • Ability to interpret and understand the Criminal Code of Canada, and relevant Federal, Provincial, and Municipal laws.
  • Knowledge of the day-to-day functions for the RCMP or police environment.
  • Ability to work with general supervision demonstrating responsibility to effectively prioritize and coordinate a demanding workload.
  • Ability to deal responsibly and discreetly with highly confidential information.
  • Strong verbal and written skills with ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner.
  • High degree of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in various Microsoft Office applications.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Diploma in Office Administration, Law Enforcement, Criminology, or other related discipline is required.
  • PROS End User Training and Information Manager Certificate is required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in an Operational RCMP/Police environment, with knowledge of police procedures, court procedures, PROS experience, and the safe storage and handling of exhibits is required.
  • Previous related experience in a legal background is an asset.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a PAL for non-restricted and restricted firearms is required.
  • Required to work in unsanitary, adverse conditions in the presence of controlled substances, handling of chemical and biological exhibits and other sensitive items.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • May be required to work with various open and contaminated exhibits.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
