ATCO\'s Transformation Team is hiring a Project Specialist, Prototyping! We know that the rapid advancement of technology is impacting and enhancing the ways we work. As the successful candidate, you will fill the role of Project Specialist, Prototyping, and join us in applying your knowledge in design, engineering, safety and prototyping to collaboratively develop a vision for in-house prototyping capability and bring that vision to life. Additionally, you will work alongside project teams across ATCO to gain a deep understanding of the problems they are facing and to help them hypothesize and test solutions to those problems.

You must have experience thriving in and encouraging collaborative work environments while not hesitating to own, define, and deliver on complex and ambiguous tasks, project and programs. You must also function effectively outside of traditional hierarchies, encouraging thought diversity and harnessing the benefits of a beginner\'s mindset.

This is an on-site position based out of our ATCO Park location in southwest Calgary, Alberta, where we have a prototyping space to build and test solutions with various materials, including but not limited to, polymers, wood working, electronics and metals. We welcome applicants from a diverse set of backgrounds who can learn quickly and are eager to approach problems that may fall outside of their traditional areas of expertise as a part of a dynamic team.

What you get to do:

  • Collaboratively develop and implement a strategy to build capability in physical prototyping at ATCO, including but not limited to building physical prototypes with polymers, wood, electronics and metals, and through utilizing additive manufacturing methods (e.g., 3D printing).
  • Perform discovery and research to understand and to assess the needs of ATCO, the Transformation Team and project teams, including with regard to physical prototyping, ensuring there is alignment between the interests and needs of users and the prototyping strategy.
  • Manage the Transformation Team\'s prototyping space in Calgary, Alberta.
  • Serve as a resource for prototype design, including by guiding project teams through the prototyping experience and leveraging you own skills to design and deliver physical prototypes.
  • Lead and facilitate the progression and execution of a minimum of 1 to 2 projects or Transformation Team initiatives at one time.
  • Develop procedures for the safe use of the prototyping space and equipment, including scheduling, training programs and safety procedures.
  • Support colleagues and Transformation Team members in prototype design and testing to support and advance projects.
  • Research and advise on the overall prototyping strategy and the capabilities of prototyping equipment and materials.
  • Identify, evaluate, and cultivate strategic partnerships with stakeholders, including internal leaders and external subject matter experts and vendors in design, engineering, safety, prototyping, and testing.
  • Collaborate and share learnings across ATCO.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate or master\'s degree in engineering or material sciences is preferred.
  • College diploma from a technical school demonstrating a specialized focus in design prototyping with a demonstrated history of application will be considered (e.g., Mechanical Engineering Technologist)
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in designing and building prototypes as part of project teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Natural curiosity and ability to deal successfully with ambiguity.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a self-starter who takes a proactive approach to solving problems.
  • Proven ability in facilitating multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience working in manufacturing or prototyping, building and testing physical products using a variety of methods (e.g., machining, 3D printing).
  • Demonstrated experience in design and drafting, including experience with design software.
  • Ability to research and educate others on technical subjects.
  • Highly familiar with workstream collaboration platforms (i.e. Microsoft Teams) and committed to transparency and working in and administering a robust connected environment.
