invites applications for a

Project Manager

. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


Alberta Neuroscience is at the epicenter of important innovations and efforts relating to brain health and the neuroscience community across Alberta. With a joint collaboration between the Universities of Alberta, Calgary, and Lethbridge, we are actively involved in catapulting research and efforts of the academic community to the realm of translation and innovation. Through collaborative partnerships with researchers, government and health system stakeholders, industry and community organizations, Alberta Neuroscience aims to improve brain health in Alberta and beyond.


The Project Manager is responsible for managing diverse network activities and events of Alberta Neuroscience and leading teams in the delivery of projects, programs and events. This position reports to the Executive Director, Alberta Neuroscience. The Project Manager will be required to work highly independently and will formulate, develop, administer and manage projects, policies and procedures for achieving Alberta Neuroscience goals in neuroscience research, innovation, education and translation.


The Project Manager will have a demonstrated ability to lead, influence and supervise others, contribute to long range strategic planning and establish and evaluate performance standards. At the same time, effective, ongoing collaboration with the core collaborators at the three universities (Canadian Centre for Behavioral Neuroscience, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute staff, leadership and members), within the university, industry and government stakeholders will be critical.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):


Managerial Responsibilities:

Job profile development and updates Recruiting, training and onboarding of staff Performance manage including discipline and termination of employees Proactively determine staffing needs Oversee general operations of the research team, including recommending best practices, coordinating workflow and workloads and reviewing and monitoring work to ensure consistency of practices and compliance to research practices Act as a coach or mentor in training and development of team by providing clinical and research guidance Lead and implement change on the team to support succession planning, continuous improvement and appropriately escalate and problem solve emerging issues to the Executive Director

Manage Projects and Solution Delivery:

Manage key Alberta Neuroscience project(s) from concept through to reporting, working within the goals and strategies developed by the Alberta Neuroscience leadership and relevant Alberta Neuroscience committees Lead the Alberta Neuroscience staff in project delivery Define project roles, accountabilities & governance Confirm scope, objectives, risks, approaches Develop and manage a sound project plan (resources, timelines, milestones etc.) for Alberta Neuroscience projects and committees Close out projects including reporting, follow-up and hand-off as required

Innovation Support:

Provide management support to the entrepreneurship program including Stakeholder engagement with industry and entrepreneurs Support the development of an entrepreneurship cluster Managing implementation of committee strategies/projects Manage the Alberta Neuroscience team's support of the committee work and organization (meeting coordination, agendas, summaries etc.)

Opportunity Identification:

Engage with the Alberta Neuroscience leadership, Alberta Neuroscience committees and the neuroscience community to develop a set of opportunities through which Alberta Neuroscience could achieve its objectives Manage the scanning, research and analysis required to validate and refine opportunities Develop and implement approaches to accessing selected opportunities in consultation with Alberta Neuroscience leadership Manage Alberta Neuroscience stakeholder engagement Develop and maintain an extensive network of resources that can support/enhance neuroscience collaborations in research, education and translation (e.g. facilitators, writers, managers) Maintain a network of contract agencies that are relevant to the needs of Alberta Neuroscience (e.g. research & analysis, communications, event support)

Qualifications / Requirements:



Minimum 5 years of relevant project management experience with emphasis on decision-making, delivery and organizational skills 3 years management and/or supervisory experience Bachelor's degree required, Masters/PhD preferred PMP designation an asset A combination of education and experience may be considered Proven ability to lead teams in achieving goals and targets Understanding of university, government, innovation and community stakeholder perspectives Highly developed problem solving, analytical and organizational skills Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills, specifically with grant writing Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor Possess self-confidence and poise to deal appropriately with a wide variety of people and situations from the student level to high-profile community leaders and dignitaries Experience working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities Ability to anticipate needs, plan, organize, coordinate and perform work with little or no direction Proven ability to work both independently, and in a geographically distributed team setting
