The opportunity

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a Project Lead, Senior System Designer to join us for a 12-month contract (with renewal) within our Engineering Department. This is a Montreal-based role working primarily on local projects with the possibility of travel to Toronto. CBC/Radio-Canada has one of the largest technological infrastructures and private networks in the world that uniquely deploys our content and services from coast-to-coast-to-coast. In this role, you will play a critical role in the design, optimization and delivery of projects including updating, installing, configuring, and testing equipment, software and systems. You will ensure that the designs and system implementations you oversee are in accordance with CBC/Radio-Canada, accepted industry practices and applicable Federal and Provincial regulations.

Who you are and where are you now?

You are a Project Lead, Senior System Designer with a passion for designing and optimizing complex storage systems. You have hands-on experience designing and overseeing the delivery of infrastructure systems in telecommunication, banking or another industry. You have outstanding leadership skills including the ability to guide the work of a team and a logical, structured mindset that demands you approach problems and issues in an organized, well-thought-out manner. You may have experience working in both French and English.

Media files are highly nuanced and incredibly complicated; moving our broadcasting content from on-prem servers to the cloud is a complex technical feat. And that\xe2\x80\x99s just the beginning. This one-of-a-kind wide network infrastructure is always in transformation, growing and evolving, with new technologies based on new business and industry realities. Your project work will range from:

  • Strategic planning and reporting.
  • Providing expert advice on cost, timeframe and feasibility of capital requirements.
  • Controlling and tracking the schedules and budgets for capital projects as well as monitoring progress to ensure compliance with scope and objectives.
  • Design.
  • Innovating practical solutions to complex problems, particularly where new technologies are to be integrated into existing facilities. This will include virtualizing media infrastructure to allow more flexibility for the corporation.
  • Creating concept designs for review with our business partners as well as conceptualizing and formulating alternative solutions which satisfy defined objectives.
  • Preparing functional, schematic, layout drawings and associated documentation, and detailed installation instructions for wiring crews.
  • Implementation and procurement.
  • Coordinating with groups to manage the project implementation as per the approved business case.
  • Overseeing procurement, from preparing Supply Requirements to Request for Quotations/Proposals when necessary and evaluating responses.
  • Handover and acceptance,
  • Verifying system performance against design criteria, providing test documentation.
  • Identifying project deficiencies and assigns resources to correct them.
  • Preparing documentation for ongoing operation and maintenance of facilities.

What you bring
  • The education. You have a degree in Engineering and you are eligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. You have networking certification.
  • The experience. You have expertise in designing, planning and overseeing the implementation of infrastructure for network, advanced IP routing, IP telephony, unified communications, virtualization and storage technologies. You have hands-on experience with Hyperconverged solutions and platforms; deploying large scale software of critical IT security and networking concepts. You work on the cutting edge of technology and pick up new tools quickly. You are aware of modern, best practices and you thrive in an Agile environment.
  • The project management expertise. You can navigate business and financial decisions; negotiate contracts and conflicts; and drive the deliverables of major projects on time. You understand how to work within the processes and use the significant budget as well as existing resources, tools and personnel to your advantage. You are a strategic thinker with the motivation to think through complex issues, remove the roadblocks and innovate multiple solutions.
  • The communication skills. You can nurture strong two-way relationships with peers, partners, clients, staff, senior managers and external technological vendors. You are skilled at presenting ideas, documenting processes and workflows and designing systems. You can relay your opinions with sensitivity. Fluency in both French and English would be a great asset, further enabling you to collaborate with and support the teams and end-users across the country.
