Project Engineer - Engineering Services

Engineering Services and Life Cycle Engineering provide engineering leadership to support a wide range of activities related to new and operating nuclear pressure vessels. Engineering Services provides commercial and technical leadership for a wide range of engineering studies including plant modifications, refurbishments and conceptual design studies for advanced reactors. We also provide pressure vessel engineering support for our Operations Services division. Life Cycle Engineering provides support for inspections and aging management of nuclear power plant components. We routinely interact with Project Managers, technical staff and field staff within BWXT and our customer organizations. We are a dynamic group where the nature of the work is always changing and no two days are ever the same.

Responsibilities:

In general, the Project Engineer is accountable for:

  • Overall accountability of the technical adequacy of the design and execution of engineering activities related to assigned projects.
  • Completion of the engineering deliverables for the assigned projects in accordance with the technical requirements, schedule and assigned budget (manhours and dollars, as applicable), with the support of other engineering resources within BWXT.
  • Supervise the work of less experienced Project Engineers.
  • Reviewing and accepting the customer technical requirements on behalf of BWXT.
  • Ensuring that the technical requirements are in compliance with applicable Code, jurisdictional and any special BWXT requirements.
  • Compliance with department operating procedures and quality assurance program requirements applicable to the specific assigned projects.
  • Interfacing with outside organizations (customer, vendor) to achieve the project technical requirements.
In addition to the above Project Engineering accountabilities, the following accountabilities are applicable to this role:
  • Perform Project Management duties for assigned projects, as assigned by the Manager of Engineering Services.
  • Preparation of technical and commercial proposals for Engineering Services projects.
  • Perform engineering role to evaluate outage inspection data to determine plugging, re-scan or other remedial measures required to meet the component structural integrity requirements. Outage support is often 24/7 with a dedicated team and may require occasional travel to customer sites for several weeks at a time.
  • Prepare and coordinate preparation of Degradation Assessments, Condition Monitoring assessments and Operational Assessments to justify return to service of critical equipment.
  • Preparation of technical proposals for engineering studies related to achieving life-cycle goals and as input to field services inspection proposals.
  • Accountabilities above will vary with the experience level of the Project Engineer in accordance with the individual job classification of the particular Project Engineer.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (either Mechanical, Materials, Chemistry, Nanotechnology or Systems Design).
  • Minimum of 5 years of related engineering experience.
  • Ability to support multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines.
  • Capable of developing practical, innovative solutions for a range of technical challenges.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience related to nuclear pressure vessel equipment design and operation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with degradation mechanisms related to pressure vessels and heat exchangers, including tube wear, stress corrosion cracking, FAC, etc. is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ASME Pressure Vessel Codes (Sec. III and Sec. VIII) is required.
  • Familiarity with Engineering Change Control processes in nuclear power plants is preferred.
