Position Overview

The Diagnostic Services Unit in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Program Outreach Coordinator, Enhanced Livestock Diagnostics. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Director.

This position addresses needs within the Diagnostic Services Unit. The Program Outreach Coordinator, Enhanced Livestock Diagnostics is a member of the Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU) of the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). Reporting to the Director, Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU), the Program Outreach Coordinator, Enhanced Livestock Diagnostics will assist with project management and livestock stakeholder outreach within the DSU in relation to the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (S-CAP) grant supporting enhanced livestock diagnostics.

This position is primarily located at Spy Hill Campus; however, occasional travel to the Foothills Campus and stakeholder groups may be required. This position is full-time (1 FTE) working 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but on occasion, there may be the need to work outside of regular hours.

This is a Maternity Leave Replacement position.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Project Management:
  • Directs and manages the work associated with the S-CAP grant in partnership with the Director DSU and Manager of Operations DSU
  • Ensures the deliverables of the project and stakeholder expectations are met while maintaining high quality diagnostic results
  • Produces reports on livestock data to government, surveillance networks, and livestock industry partners
  • Creates interim and final reports and financial tracking to granting agencies
  • Facilitates working groups and advisory committees
  • Communications and Marketing:
  • Manages a communications plan on livestock diagnostics and surveillance for internal and external stakeholders in partnership with Director DSU, Manager of Operations DSU, and Manager of Marketing and Communication UCVM
  • Creates issues of The Work-Up (the DSU\'s bi-monthly newsletter) for distribution to DSU clients, UCVM staff, faculty, and students, and the DSU website
  • Uses disease data and DSU reports to produce extension materials and training events for veterinarians and producer groups through existing organizations, industry meetings, and trade articles
  • Interacts with private practitioners and government veterinarians in partnership with DSU veterinarians
  • UCVM Veterinary Outbreak Investigation Service:
  • Appointed as Chair, UCVM Veterinary Outbreak Investigation Service (VOIS)
  • Deploys UCVM faculty for on-farm disease investigations upon request from Alberta practitioners. Assists in on-farm investigations as required by attending UCVM faculty. Duties may include assisting with field post-mortem examination and sample collection from live animals in outbreak situations
  • Maintains VOIS case documentation, communicates with Alberta veterinarians requesting VOIS service, approves or declines VOIS requests from Alberta veterinarians, and assists the Operations Manager, DSU with VOIS billing
  • Assists with the development of a virtual post-mortem service in partnership with the Director DSU
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A DVM is preferred with a minimum requirement of 3 years experience working with livestock industries, in veterinary diagnostics or epidemiology, or veterinary practice in a large or mixed animal practice and eligibility for immediate licensure in Alberta through the ABVMA
  • If the top candidate does not possess a DVM, a Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) with a minimum requirement of 5 years experience working with livestock industries, in veterinary diagnostics or epidemiology, or veterinary practice in a large or mixed animal practice and eligibility for immediate licensure in Alberta through the ABVMA and ABVTA will be considered
  • Must possess demonstrable ability to efficiently organize and document work with excellent attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and client service skills is required
  • Must possess excellent demonstrable writing skills for both technical veterinary communication and lay communication of veterinary medicine. One year of experience in a communications background is desirable
  • Experience with financial reports/tracking and data management is desirable
  • Project management experience is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and become comfortable with a new software application is required
  • Must be flexible with the ability to prioritize and refocus to meet deadlines
  • Must have the ability to assess, plan, coordinate, and work under direction of senior management
  • Must be able to maintain clear communication with stakeholders on progress and emerging issues
  • Ability to problem solve to address implementation issues is critical to success in the role
  • Reliable means of transportation to Spy Hill Campus is essential
