JOB SUMMARY


The mandate of Long Term Care Services is to provide resident care based on the needs of individuals, as determined by medical, nursing, functional and psychosocial assessments, and on each resident\xe2\x80\x99s expressed needs. The care provided in each Home includes specialized, restorative, supportive and palliative care for persons with dementia, disabilities and health problems who cannot live independently in their homes, and whose needs cannot be met in the community. You are responsible for the planning, coordinated development, management and implementation of food, nutrition and environmental activities, programs, services and initiatives consistent with corporate strategic direction and corporate vision, to the residents of a long term care facility. You provide professional leadership and coordination in the planning, implementation, and administration of related policies and programs. You are responsible for establishing and maintaining positive client relationships with internal and external management and stakeholders, including Compliance Advisors, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Public Health Department, Real Property Assets Management and other Long Term Care Homes to clarify standards and best practices and provide expert advice on Food Service, Nutrition and Environmental policies. You are also responsible for developing and monitoring operating budgets, and for managing the human resources of the unit, including hiring, termination, performance management and discipline of staff as necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Completion of 4 year university degree in food sciences, hospitality and tourism management or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in a health care institutional setting, including a minimum of 2 years in the management of human resources and/or external contract resources, and management of operating and capital budgets, preferably in a municipal setting.

  • Principles, theories, standards and best practices in Food & Nutrition, housekeeping and laundry services.

  • Canadian College of Health Services Accreditation Standards.
  • Principles, policies and practices of Nursing management and administration.
  • Techniques, approaches and procedures appropriate to the multi-disciplinary management and delivery of care to residents with cognitive impairments and psycho-geriatric conditions.
  • Infectious diseases and preventive measures.
  • Community resources.
  • Labour relations practices and administration of a collective agreement.
  • Group dynamics and team building techniques.
  • General knowledge of budget practices and procedures.
  • General knowledge of the City of Ottawa and of corporate and departmental policies and procedures
  • Legislation, policies, regulations, guidelines and operational procedures relevant to the operational area
  • Contract document preparation, the tendering process and supervision of field services
  • Supervisory experience and motivational techniques. Working knowledge of corporate human resource policies, practices and collective agreements related to managing in a unionized environment, including hiring, dismissal, performance management and the grievance procedure
  • Financial management practices and budget processes
  • Methods used to deal with the media in a professional manner
  • Standards specific to specialty area
  • Equipment operation specific to specialty area
  • Computer applications, including MS Office,
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa\xe2\x80\x99s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete a Declaration of Offences and Misconduct form.
