About Sunnybrook and the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation

Sunnybrook Research Institute attracts $100 million of research funding each year and is housed alongside Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre -one of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s premiere academic health sciences centres.

The Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program is a dedicated program for the treatment and research of the most common and challenging brain conditions, building on several decades of history and tradition at Sunnybrook in the management of brain disease.

Sunnybrook Research Institute and the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program have established the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation (HCN) in 2018. The HCN drives clinical research and has led advances in neuromodulation, a rapidly evolving field that uses innovative technologies to influence brain circuitry for a wide range of brain conditions. This has grown to be among Canada\xe2\x80\x99s busiest and most comprehensive centres with the explicit focus and goal of being among the world\xe2\x80\x99s first to offer a complete range of neuromodulation strategies in one state-of-the-art facility.

Our internationally recognized researchers and scientists are investigating minimal- and non-invasive technology to target pathways in the brain that are at the root of the most common and challenging brain disorders including: Alzheimer\xe2\x80\x99s disease, Parkinson\xe2\x80\x99s Disease, ALS, essential tremor, major depression, OCD, and others.

The experts at The Harquail Centre are committed to investigating and developing novel treatments that are individualized and tailored to our patients\xe2\x80\x99 needs. Given the exponential growth of this area and the resultant strong public and academic interest, HCN is eager to solidify our leadership within the local, national and international community and commit to ensuring a long-term sustainable program.

Sustainability

  • Bridge dialogue with Sunnybrook Foundation, SRI Finance and SHSC Operations to ensure continuity and alignment when evidence based-investigational neuromodulation therapies warrant or require integration to clinical pathways
  • Determine priority leveraging opportunities and key areas for growth from philanthropic support with peer-reviewed awards, supplementary operational costs
  • Facilitate integration of funding and operational success of emerging therapies into clinical practice (eg: humanitarian/ new indications Deep Brain Stimulation, HIFU and program operations, TMS development)
  • Work with clinical program leads to ensure clinical research equipment purchases/ upgrades/ or modified therapies integrate into any existing workflow while understanding impact on hospital and research resources
  • Tracking/maintenance of HCN database for investigator grants awarded as PI or CoI
  • Identify and oversee the development of strategic funding opportunities from government and operating program grants, and other \xe2\x80\x9cmatching funds\xe2\x80\x9d, or large-scale grants that align with the research priorities of HCN within SRI and SHSC
  • Steer applications for operational support to sustain sub-specialities of the Brain Therapeutics Unit within the Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation; including identification, application framing, financial and progress reporting.
  • Maintain and grow existing relationships with external funding bodies (eg: Focused Ultrasound Foundation, Veterans Canada, Weston Brain, InSightec, University of Toronto - Grants office, Institute of Medical Science )
  • Develop charter for attracting and retaining HCN Scientific Expertise and essential program members; identify short and long-term program goals for among HCN team of investigators with focus on sustainability
  • Presentations and reporting to donors, SRI, SHSC leadership and regulatory bodies (internal/external) as required by Director
  • Provide oversight of clinical trial operations, training and mentoring of new study mangers in focused ultrasound (neurodegenerative platform); study budget design, research ethics applications, regulatory monitoring preparedness, recruitment planning and patient-centred operations
  • Approve Harquail personnel time, vacation
Routine meeting with Foundation and Hospital partners:
  • HCN Investigators (bimonthly). Ensure alignment of strategic sustainability goals with scientific outcomes and current evidence, and pursuit of leveraging funds
  • SBF: Bimonthly new opportunity updates
  • Brain Sciences finances and leadership quarterly discussion
Finance Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation
  • Regular Meetings with SRI Finance: Monthly accounting expense updates ensuring regular review of ongoing cost transfers, ensuring completion and start -up of clinical trial and funding accounts.
  • Approver for payment, expense allocation, transfers and invoicing of all active HCN -Lipsman Cost Centres
  • Track invoicing and agreements of sub-awards to external collaborators
  • Clinical Trial Budget review: ensure appropriate personnel, trial costs, and overhead are supported through clinical trial grants
  • Ensure accurate invoicing of clinical trial funds to appropriate organization (industry, charitable)
  • Purchasing: Follow appropriate procurement processes for the acquisition of large capital and /or research supplies. Liase with vendors, Plexxus and SHSC accounts payable 0
  • Review contracts for clinical equipment purchases and clinical trial budgets; ensuring support (warranties for hardware/software maintenance, software upgrades, disposable supplies, overhead etc) and understand the impact on the hospital resources where appropriate
  • Maintain database of invoices for capital program purchases supported through HCN funds
  • Knowledge of SRI platforms: SRM, Dimensions, SBF Gateway and GMR is required
Qualifications/Skills
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in health sciences /health administration or neurosciences preferred
  • Clinical neuroscience and/or research background, regulated health professional an asset
  • 5 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in budget management, preferably in an academic field
  • 5-10 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in clinical trial management
  • Academic and operating grant writing and presentation skills, detail oriented
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands from multi-disciplinary groups, and work independently under pressure
  • Understanding of regulatory processes, Health Canada requirements and data management practices , GCP
  • Demonstrated leadership, discretion and strategic thinking skills, solutions-oriented, growth mindset
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships and build interdisciplinary teams
