Wii Chiiwaakanak means "partners" in Anishinabemowin and is an outreach initiative through The University of Winnipeg that provides educational, learning and capacity building opportunities in Winnipeg's inner city.
The Program Assistant is a part-time (5-15 hours per week), term position that will support all major Indigenous-focused programs and events hosted by the Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre. They will be the first point of contact and provide assistance to community members accessing the learning commons while also supporting educational, learning and cultural community programming.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones, directs calls and records messages.
  • Answers general in person inquires about the Centre and available programming.
  • Oversee the RBC Community Learning Commons - Wii Chiiwaakanak's Computer Lab. This includes assisting community members/patrons with writing resumes, job applications and job searches.
  • Assists with general office duties including organizing, maintaining files, and upkeep of the kitchen.
  • Assist with financials such as: visa reconciliations, electronic and physical finance records.
  • Assist with the Centre's programming: helps with promotion using social media, updating website, organizing and acquiring/preparing program food and materials, set up and clean up.
  • Maintains stats of all program and events - including the 5+ STEAM program and cultural and language programs, STEM events, cultural workshops, and classroom bookings.
  • Support all external facilitators, volunteers, and students by providing materials and processing payments. Co-lead or lead in the absence of the facilitators for STEM Explorers.
  • Assist with programming as needed, supporting program manager, teachers, and summer students.
  • Update all programming electronics regularly and track all equipment.
  • Organize program and event supplies regularly.
  • Assist with Indigenous Engagement events as needed.
Qualifications:
  • High school completion or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary student preferred.
  • Experience working with the Indigenous and inner-city communities is considered an asset.
  • Experience compiling statistics and experience with managing financial records is an asset.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Willingness to learn new programs like Cascade to update the Centre's website regularly.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work and communicate in a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and written.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous cultural practices and good relationship building is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and the public.
  • A valid class 5 driver's license and access to a vehicle is considered an asset but not required.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position will be from $17.43 to $24.22 per hour, plus 6% vacation pay
