Position Summary




Reporting to the Academic Department Manager, and working collaboratively with the Administrative Supervisor and the Chairs of the departments of Cell Biology, Medical Genetics, Pharmacology and Physiology, the Scientific Educator will play a key role in supporting various community educational efforts of four academic departments within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. This position will be responsible for organizing numerous seminars, lectureships, professional development rounds, research events, student orientation activities, and developing and disseminating scientific papers and internal education initiatives. The incumbent will also ensure proper dissemination of all information related to these activities. The Scientific Educator will also support the development of dissemination strategies to reach the scientific communities and potential students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, attracting and engaging with potential students, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of the departments' student enrollment efforts.


One of the key roles of the incumbent will be to translate research outcomes and concepts in cell biology, medical genetics, pharmacology and physiology into engaging, accessible content for general public attending seminars and lectureships. This position requires an understanding of scientific principles, excellent communication skills, and a knack for simplifying complex ideas without sacrificing accuracy. The Scientific Educator will play a crucial role in educating and inspiring potential students, the scientific community and the general public about the fascinating world of human medical sciences.


The position will also be responsible for carrying out the various administrative and logistics duties related to popularization, event planning and organization.

Duties




Science Popularization

Develop, organize and ensure the success of lectureships, professional development rounds, scientific seminars, public lectures, panel discussions and other events showcasing the departments' research and fostering interdepartmental collaborations and to present the departments' research, achievements, and contributions to the fields of pharmacology, cell biology, medical genetics, and physiology; Create engaging content, such as papers, articles, and videos, that convey complex scientific concepts and research discoveries in an accessible and compelling way for attendees, targeted stakeholders, potential students and, as needed, the general public. Develop presentation materials: + Create engaging PowerPoint presentations and other visual aids.
+ Incorporate multimedia elements such as videos, infographics, and interactive content.
+ Ensure presentation materials are aligned with workshop/seminar objectives.
+ Assist in developing design and graphics;
Assist in the development of educational workshops and seminars: + Collaborate with team members to brainstorm workshop and seminar topics.
+ Conduct research to gather relevant information and resources.
+ Assist in designing workshop curriculum and seminar content.


Event Planning and Organizing

Assist in organizing seminars, research events, student orientation activities, Open doors, recruitment initiatives, and other departmental events. Coordinate logistics for educational departmental events, including equipment setup, catering, audiovisual equipment, registration, timelines, and signage, etc. Assist in the preparation of post-event reports and evaluations.

Support for Speakers, Faculty and Students

Offer various academic and technical assistance to students preparing for thesis defenses, including formatting guidelines, rehearsal support, and troubleshooting technical issues with presentation materials. Collaborate with graduate students and faculty advisors to coordinate audio-visual requirements for thesis defenses, including room setup, equipment testing, and presentation logistics. Assist speakers, faculty, and students in preparing content and testing audio-visual presentations, ensuring compatibility with event technology and addressing any formatting or compatibility issues. Provide guidance on the use of presentation software, multimedia files, and other technical aspects to enhance the effectiveness of presentations.

Administrative Tasks and Logistics

Maintain and update the websites of the four departments to ensure accuracy and relevance of information. Develop and disseminate news, emails, and other internal information materials to keep faculty, staff, and students informed. Assist researchers and PIs in their efforts to recruit graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and other staff to work on their projects, by disseminating information, identifying potential candidates, and reaching out to various scientific communities. Coordinate with departmental staff and faculty to gather content to be disseminated. Maintain audio-visual departmental equipment and provide technical support for presentation, seminars, etc.

Qualifications



Undergraduate degree (or higher) in a medical basic science complemented by training in education, facilitation, creative writing or editing, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in a combination of event planning, facilitation or workshop development and delivery. Experience in a research laboratory is a solid asset. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with website management and content creation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and content management systems. Ability or interest to work with graphic design software, including scientific-focused tools such as BioRender and similar tools. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Knowledge of the healthcare or academic environment is an asset.
