Position Summary As part of our commitment to actualizing the imperative of Truth and Reconciliation across our academic programs and amplifying the contributions and voices of Indigenous scholars, community members and industry experts, the School of Community and Health Studies is seeking to hire a Full-Time Professor in the area of Early Childhood Education. The successful candidate will be teaching in the area of Early Childhood Education in the classroom, computer laboratory, online and field settings. They will participate in program and course development, course modifications, program advisory committees, program accreditation, applied research initiatives (where applicable), community outreach and on-going future program needs. This program is currently also offering a tuition free cohort of the Early Childhood Education Diploma in partnership with Native Child and Family Services and Dnaagdawenmag Binnoojiiyag. This opportunity is funded in partnership with the City of Toronto, The Region of Durham, the Province of Ontario and Government of Canada under the new Canada-Ontario Early Childhood Workforce Agreement, which provides one-time federal funding to support the retention and recruitment of a high-quality child care and early years workforce.?This stream is being taught both in the community and at Centennial college to promote culturally specific and culturally safe learning. The field of Early Childhood Education has a long history of compliance with colonization. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has called \xe2\x80\x9cupon the federal, provincial, territorial, and Aboriginal governments to develop culturally appropriate early childhood education programs for Aboriginal families\xe2\x80\x9d (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2012). The College of ECE\xe2\x80\x99s code of ethics and standards of practice also requires that practitioners respond to the uniqueness of children, including cultural and linguistic diversity and Indigenous identity. ECEs are required to respect a child\xe2\x80\x99s language and culture and include the unique needs of Indigenous children (College of Early Childhood Educators, 2017). This current posting is in line with the commitment of the program to work on these Calls to Action. Through knowledge of and connection to Indigenous communities, nations, histories, knowledge systems, languages or pedagogies, the successful candidate will contribute to actualizing the College\xe2\x80\x99s commitments to Indigenizing the learning environment by engaging the College community broadly in Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, being and communicating.
Responsibilities
In addition to teaching assigned courses the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Employ teaching strategies and create learning environments drawing upon current best practices in teaching and learning, including, where deemed relevant and appropriate by the incumbent, Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, teaching and being in relation to Land, people and community and culturally relevant childhood development
  • Participate in ongoing course curriculum and program design and revision, with a focus on informing from an understanding of or integrating Indigenous knowledges, perspectives and/or pedagogies, where deemed relevant and appropriate by the incumbent
  • Share in the collaborative development of a working and learning environment that positively values Indigenous possibility and Indigenous futures
  • Develop and maintain relationships with co-workers and external stakeholders including Elders, community leaders, community organizations and industry
  • Integrate Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing throughout all aspects of the ECE Program. This may include Indigenous curriculum development, research and pedagogic practices and critically examine learning materials and classroom instructional practice for discriminatory bias or barriers
  • Coach students using culturally responsive strategies and resources, supporting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners
  • Provide and promote a respectful and supportive environment based upon the principles of inclusion, equity and diversity
  • Use academic technology effectively to engage students and support learning
  • Evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes with a variety of approaches and techniques and provide regular, timely feedback
  • Use a variety of appropriate teaching/learning strategies
  • Develop, revise and adapt appropriate learning resources and curriculum
  • Teach courses to all levels of students in the Early Childhood Education program
  • Remain current in knowledge of the field of early childhood and in instructional delivery methodologies
  • Attend meetings, maintain student grades/assessments and participate in activities pertinent to faculty responsibilities

Qualifications/Experience
  • Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Studies; equivalent work and lived experience will be considered
  • Registered with College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE) preferred, or willingness to register
  • Minimum of two years teaching and or training experience in traditional and non-traditional settings
  • Knowledge of and connection to Indigenous knowledge systems, languages, pedagogies, nations and/or communities, with specific knowledge of Indigenous approaches to Early Childhood Education or working with children and communities
  • Ability to communicate reflectively and show reciprocity in written, oral and non-verbal communication
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles and practices of equity, anti-racism, decolonizing and accessibility
  • Progressive and varied experience working with children
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development, emergent curriculum and current issues/trends in Early Childhood Education, CCEYC, How Does Learning Happen, Family Support and Jk/Sk environments
  • Knowledge of adult education principles and the role of learning outcomes, instructional approaches and evaluation techniques to be used
  • Experience in program related applied research is an asset
  • Experience in community building, including research and publications, is an asset
  • Experience course development and in the development of on-line course content, materials and resources
  • Proven ability to use a variety of teaching/learning strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to develop learning materials and resources and deliver instruction for students, in face to face and online environments
