Role





The Product Engineer participates in the planning and manufacturing execution of aerospace/astronomy and specialty optics. The product engineer's role is to become the expert of a particular product or product line, and work to ensure that the manufacturing of that product is successful and optimized. He/she works closely with the other departments on all stages of a product's lifecycle, from quotation to final delivery. This role requires a detailed understanding of the specifications for each product and stages of production, as well as an especially high degree of attention to detail and in-process reporting. The product engineer may also be asked conduct process development during the introduction of new products, where existing capabilities are not sufficient to address the product needs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities





Establish and maintain a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the product specifications and requirements for assigned projects; Design the manufacturing process flows for new products Support Application Engineering and Sales regarding process capability, process maturity, and risk management during the negotiation phase of new projects; Take prime responsibility for assigned development and new product introduction (NPI) of specialty products, including, as required: + Bid preparation (non-financial aspects);
+ Project scheduling- external high level and internal manufacturing;
+ Development of new processes and test methods and transfer to manufacture;
+ Day to day project and production management, tracking and reporting;
+ Supply and supplier development;
+ Risk management and failure analysis.
Work closely with the Application Engineering, Logistics, and Manufacturing departments on the successful manufacturing of new, complex products. Must maintain a security clearance associated with the Canadian Controlled Goods Program; Facilitate communication of technical and logistical information between different departments to enable the manufacturing of complex products. Lead and/or participate in special projects and assignments as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills





University degree in engineering or science; Proven experience in successfully resolving challenging technical problems in the fabrication and testing of high-tech products; Comprehensive understanding of optical specification standards and characterization methods. Ability to be organized and methodical, customer-focused and detail oriented, yet flexible and creative in overcoming obstacles; Ability to read, interpret and write complex technical documentation; Proficient in Microsoft Office (Work, PowerPoint, Excel) Ability to evaluate resource requirements and timelines in situations involving uncertainty; Ability to effectively communicate complex logistical and technical concepts Familiarity and working capability with NPI project management tools such as Gantt charts, FMEA, risk assessments and compliance matrices.

Additional Qualifications





Knowledge of statistics and data analysis, optics, laser physics, process control, semi-conductor manufacturing, or photolithography would be an asset. Ability to effectively adapt to changes and challenges, while not losing focus on long-term objectives. Maintains professionalism.

Working Conditions





This position involves significant responsibility, risk taking abilities, and requires independent decision making, while maintaining relationships with others both inside and outside the organization in all situations; Working with tight deadlines and conflicting priorities from frequent interruptions; General office hours are followed; may be required to work irregular hours in order to meet project requirements and deadlines; Travel to customer and vendor sites as required and any related tradeshow/conference activities as required.

Type of Supervision Received





Works closely with the Manager of Manufacturing Engineering, including discussions about the status of projects, weekly engineering meetings, monthly or bi-monthly progress reports, as well as annual performance reviews.
