Job Description


As a Process Safety Engineer you will engage with operating area teams and with process safety management team stakeholders as you fulfill the requirements of this dual role. Your goal will be to rely on experience and judgement to plan and complete engineering deliverables in a well-defined supervised environment. Your success will enable our multi-disciplinary team of engineers to execute safely, efficiently, reliably and productively on a variety of capital expense projects and energy transition work.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Prepare, lead, and facilitate multiple types of risk assessments with stakeholders. This includes What-if, HazId, HazOp, LOPA, Procedure PHAs, and Consequence Modelling.
  • Help develop, implement, and manage our process safety risk identification and analysis program within Engineering Services.
  • Conduct in-depth data analysis, interpret, then present study report findings to the Senior Engineering Services Leadership Team as needed; provide insight to support decision making related to risk management. Develop and distribute study reports.
  • Identify, select, and coordinate participation in risk assessments from subject matter experts within Area Operations, Technical, Reliability, and Projects teams.
  • Work with Heat and Material Balance and process simulations, performing hydraulic calculations, preparation of equipment/ instrument datasheets, line lists, and process design basis, management of PFDs and P&IDs, development of operating guidelines etc.
  • Collaborate with Front End and other Engineering Services disciplines, Process Engineering, Refinery Technical, Process Safety Management and Project Execution Teams
  • Collaborate on project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors. Direct, review and approve their work and deliverables.
  • Coach and mentor our process technical team and others to develop our process engineering, process safety, and PHA capabilities.
Your Skills:
  • Strong remote and in-person facilitation skills; able to keep a group engaged and focused.
  • Good understanding of refinery operations and associated economic drivers.
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with the following PHA software is an asset \xe2\x80\x93 PHA Pro, PHAST.
  • Proficiency with the following Process engineering software is an asset \xe2\x80\x93 Aspen HYSYS, EDR / HTRI, AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow.
  • Able to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.
Your Experience:
  • University degree in Chemical Engineering with EIT or P.Eng. designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required.
  • 8+ years of experience facilitating PHA and LOPAs, paired with PHA and LOPA training and certification is required.
  • 8+ years of experience in a process engineering capacity, preferably in the oil and gas and/or refining industry.
