Market Analysis and Operations (MAO)
MAO is responsible for running the Bank\'s domestic and foreign exchange market operations. We use our unique blend of market expertise, operational know-how and industry relationships to produce high quality market analysis and policy advice. The group is also responsible for developing and promoting innovative initiatives that support market best-practice and an efficient Canadian financial system, and plays a key role in publishing the Canadian Overnight Repo Rate Average. We work closely with the Department of Finance and advise the federal government on its debt strategy.

MAO is organized into sections reflecting our market operations: money markets, bonds and foreign exchange. Foreign exchange operations typically consist of foreign exchange forwards and swaps. Fixed income and money market operations typically include repo transactions, securities lending operations, and asset purchases for the Bank of Canada or on behalf of the Government of Canada.

What you will do
As a Principal Trader Analyst, you will be responsible for undertaking and overseeing operations, and for actively managing operational and financial risks. You will provide operational and knowledge leadership, guidance and feedback to your section in performing its daily activities and ensure coherent functioning across teams in Ottawa and the Calgary Operational Site, the Bank\'s alternate site for operations in downtown Calgary. You will also be expected to work closely with the Calgary office and play a leading role in developing policy and analytical work, and to participate in cross training in different operations as opportunities arise.

The candidate will work a compliment of both onsite (Head Office) and from home. Please note that the ability to work onsite is a requirement due to the position being part of the Bank\'s Critical Operations.

What you need to succeed
As a Principal Trader Analyst, you communicate clearly and adapt your communication style for a wide range of audiences, including senior management and external stakeholders. You have strong interpersonal skills; you build supportive working relationships with internal and with external parties. You are capable of structuring work plans and you lead initiatives through to completion. You will display coaching and mentoring skills and the ability to coach junior staff towards achieving the team\'s objectives.

You have strong analytic skills, bringing a wide range of considerations and perspectives to issues. You take initiative and are good at prioritizing, managing risks and identifying areas for improvement. You are committed to learning and development, including cross-training in different operations or sections. You are familiar with analytic and information tools such as Bloomberg, spreadsheets and straight-through processing systems.

You must have the following:

  • knowledge of the Bank\'s fiscal-agent, monetary policy and financial system responsibilities
  • knowledge of financial market issues and developments, as well as knowledge of economic/financial theory and quantitative methods
  • ability to integrate in-depth knowledge and understanding in financial market analysis, monetary policy analysis, economic analysis and regulatory issues analysis
  • knowledge of the global fixed income, foreign exchange, equity and commodity markets
And are able to:
  • contribute to team objectives by sharing ideas, knowledge and feedback
  • collaborate and be part of an amazing team
  • multi-task alongside team members while maintaining accuracy and speed on time sensitive tasks
  • communicate clearly, accurately and concisely, at times under pressure

Your education and experience
The position requires a master\'s degree in finance or economics with a minimum of 5 years of recent relevant work experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

What you need to know
  • Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of intermediate (level 3) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of functional (level 4) in second official language.
  • Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
  • Security level required: Be eligible to obtain Secret

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $112,430 to $140,535 (job grade 18)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay. The first tier of performance pay is for successfully meeting expectation, at 7 to 10% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay for those who exceed expectations (15% of your base salary).. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
