Purpose

The Principal Health Safety Environment (HSE) Directional Studies plays a pivotal role in providing leadership, direction, and expert advice to projects during the pre-identification, identification, selection, and definition phases. This role collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure safe, sustainable, and efficient project delivery throughout its lifecycle, adhering to BHP standards and requirements. The primary focus is on optimizing value for the organization through the implementation of our Social Value Framework. This role partners with line management, offering valuable advice and coaching to effectively manage HSE impacts and risks in projects, working closely with the Minerals America HSE Analysis & Improvement team. Additionally, the Principal HSE Directional Studies will analyze HSE performance data to identify improvement opportunities and support project leads and study managers in the development and execution of Projects. This will include supporting the analysis of HSE performance data to identify improvement opportunities, managing HSE-related risks (environment, water, climate, biodiversity, fatality elimination, safety, process safety, health & hygiene, etc.), and providing support to project leads and study managers in the development and execution of projects. The role will focus on HSE impact prevention and compliance through advice and coaching across the project portfolio.

About the Role

In this role, you will

  • Provide HSE input to the design and establishment of HSE standards, procedures and systems for Directional Studies within the Minerals Americas Projects Framework.
  • Be accountable for the delivery of mandated HSE support and service for allocated portfolio of Project Directional Studies.
  • Support and advise Project Directional Studies in the development of quality and effective HSE risk assessments, to support the identification of relevant HSE Risks.
  • Support application of HSE in design processes through all phases of project development.
  • Monitor and support data quality control related to HSE Systems.
  • Undertake analytics activities for HSE data including benchmarking, lessons learnt and developing key performance metrics and insight development.
  • Support in the development of HSE study chapter requirements to enable safe and sustainable gating of projects.
  • Support line management in building an understanding of, and compliance with, relevant HSE Our Requirements and legal requirements.
  • Coach Field Leadership activities and offer support and technical guidance to build a HSE leadership culture and enhance understanding of compliance relevant to company and legal requirements.

  • Provide HSE leadership, support and technical guidance.
  • Develop and deliver HSE content for upskilling of leaders, delivery team and contractor personnel.
  • Support legislative compliance and reporting for HSE, including external and regulatory reporting.
  • Provide expert advice and leadership on all issues relating to HSE.
  • Facilitate the communication between workgroups to ensure consistency in HSE systems, processes, procedures and goals.
  • Manage, control, monitor and participate in the execution of work that is the accountability of the HSE Function.
  • Participate in any other projects or key tasks as directed by line manager or delegate.
  • Coordinate field-based work to meet HSE requirements.
  • Interface with relevant HSE teams, providing relevant support for implementing initiatives and improvement projects.
About You
  • Tertiary degree in relevant field (e.g., health, safety, environment, engineering, science, risk management, etc.).
  • Cognate experience in related field.
  • Strong understanding of databases and database processes with the ability to identify opportunities to automate HSE processes and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to reliably deliver team results and meet deadlines.
  • Proven experience in leading change initiatives under difficult circumstances.
  • Experience in managing contractors and deliverables to a schedule and budget.
  • Ability to engage and work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Influence diverse teams.
  • Strong acumen for HSE data analytics and business intelligence platforms.
  • Good understanding of relevant HSE legislation.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory HSE policies and procedures and their implementation in the mining sector.
Work Location & Schedule

Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
