THE OPPORTUNITY

Due to continued growth in our Armor Division, a unique opportunity exists for an experienced Principal Automation Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be part of a team responsible for both maintenance of existing equipment and cells, and you will be tasked to create and procure new equipment and cells in the future. In addition, you will make calculated adjustments to existing programs for currently running programs and creating new programs for new parts and processes. This role requires you to be in our Newport, VT office two to three times per week.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As a critical team member, you will design and implement automated systems for use in diverse manufacturing and production environments and lead collaborative discussions between leadership and key stakeholders to determine automation capabilities and goals. In addition, you will collaborate with Design Engineering to establish best way to automate the fabrication of new products.

YOU WILL BE EVALUATED ON YOUR ABILITY TO

  • Analyze layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods and work force to maximize efficiency.
  • Support existing automation technology with component and process upgrades.
  • Provide training and guidance to all employee levels in the operation and maintenance of new equipment.
  • Deliver complex process automation projects on time and on budget to significantly improve the profitability of the Armor Business Unit.
  • Troubleshoot electrical/mechanical, pneumatic systems to find and correct errors and failures and root causes for complex problems.
  • Understand servo motors/encoders and how they track motor positions, for both new installations and maintenance of current systems.
  • Leverage your CAD (SolidWorks or similar) experience and understanding of machine tolerances to ensure successful processes.
  • Effectively participate in design reviews to improve product design for manufacturability.
  • Create detailed roadmaps to guide automation projects from conception to final implementation.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Automated Manufacturing, Electrical or Mechanical Engineer or other related discipline.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of Automation Engineering experience.
  • Experience in some form of robotics, (ABB Robotics a plus), ladder logic programming and the ability to use code to manipulate and check IO signals to accomplish tasks within an automated system.
  • Meaningful experience with 24VDC PLC and IO systems and common practice as well as familiarity with common practices of wiring, cable glands, crimping and soldering types of cable.
  • Understanding of servo motors/encoders and how they track motor positions, for both new installations and maintenance of current systems.
  • Experience with compression molding and related processes and Lean production principles is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory, French a plus.
