The Division:

The Mines and Minerals Division focuses on the provision of basic geological information gathering and interpretation in support of Ontario's exploration, mine development and mining sectors and the administration of Ontario's Mining Act in a fair and consistent fashion. The Division also works with the industry to stimulate job creation, eliminate barriers to growth in the mining sector and reduce the regulatory burden on the industry. This is carried out through the Ontario Geological Survey and the Mineral Development and Lands Branch.

The Branch:

The Ontario Geological Survey Branch collects, distributes and applies geoscience data and information to attract and guide mineral investment and to help inform broad provincial land-use planning decisions related to the environment, ecology, climate change and public health and safety.

The Unit:

The Earth Resources and Geoscience Mapping Section delivers its program through multi-year, multidisciplinary geoscience projects that address critical geoscience problems in key geographic areas of the province to improve the understanding of the geology, geochemistry and Earth resources (metals, minerals, aggregates, groundwater, hydrocarbons) of Ontario and to convey this knowledge to the public. Geoscience projects may be delivered as part of the Earth Resources & Geoscience Mapping Section (ERGMS) core program or through collaborative geoscience projects or initiatives with other organizations. ERGMS conducts a variety of regional geoscience projects across the entire province including airborne geophysical surveys, bedrock and surficial mapping, lake water and sediment sampling surveys, 3D subsurface mapping, aggregate and industrial mineral inventories. ERGMS geoscience products (data, maps, reports) and expert services are used for mineral exploration, land-use planning, establishment of environmental baseline and public health and safety.
