As the Power Systems Journeyperson, you will be accountable for conducting daily traction power system maintenance and repairs. Primary duties include:

Coordinate with Power Systems Coordinator, Working Foreperson/ Leadhand, Calgary Transit (CT) Operations Teams, Electric Utility Company Teams, CT Engineering Teams, Contractors, Consultants, outside parties, or other departments for the timely completion of maintenance activities. Attend or perform safety tailboards and hazard assessments prior to starting work on-site each day. Perform hands-on maintenance, inspections, repairs, adjustments, and tests, and provide diagnostic analysis for all traction power maintenance activities. Plan and execute switching orders and provide a Guarantee of Isolation (GOI) for traction power maintenance activities or for parties working on or near the traction power system. Operate traction power vehicles, equipment, and tools as required for maintenance activities. Escort third-party contractors in the Traction Power Substations, Light Rail Transit (LRT) Right of Way, and Maintenance Facilities. Attend and contribute to Traction Power Systems construction/capital projects meetings. Review and participate in Traction Power System designs with CT Engineering and vendors as required for special and construction projects. Coordinate with CT Operations Team(s), Electric Utility Company Team(s), CT Engineering Team(s), Contractors, Consultants, outside parties, or other departments for the timely completion of construction projects. Execute hands-on installation, testing, and commissioning of traction power system additions and upgrades.


Qualifications

A Journeyman Power System Electrician (PSE) or Journeyman Power Line Technician (PLT). 1 year of experience as a PSE and/or Technologist with a preference in traction power OR; 1 year as a PSE and/or Technologist in substation operation and maintenance OR; 1 year as a Powerline Technician (PLT) with a preference for LRT traction power. A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending. Have or the ability to obtain a valid Class 3 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with an air brake endorsement (Q) to be completed within three months of hire. Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work well in a team while working independently.

Working Conditions:

Outdoor environment in all types of weather (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.), walking, lifting and physical activity.

Pre-employment Drug Test:

An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: $65.07 per hour (2026 Rates)
Days of Work: Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; however, work shifts will be rotated or adjusted as required to meet operational needs including nights, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Hours of work: Non-standard 40 hour work week
