DNV Energy Systems' group has an exciting opportunity for a Power System Engineer (EMT Studies) in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. Our team provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America. The ideal candidate will contribute in delivering technical insights and providing customers with excellent customer service.
This role is based at our DNV office in Toronto (ON) or Montreal (QB), presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will typically spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.
The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within Canada.
What You'll Do

  • Perform Electro-magnetic Transient (EMT) Studies such as sub synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro-resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization etc.
  • Develop/tune PSCAD models, perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analysis
  • Produce and/or review technical reports and presentations for external Customers
  • Timely completion of projects assigned while meeting project quality and project budget
  • Stay up to date with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, CIGRE
  • Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations
  • Contribute to the team's research and innovative activities in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to enhance team's performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements
  • Cultivate customer relationships, technical advisory support for generations, and large load interconnections connecting to transmission system

Ce role est base a notre bureau de DNV a Toronto (ON) ou a Montreal (QB), presentant un horaire hybride dynamique ou les employes passeront generalement trois (3) jours par semaine a travailler a partir d'un bureau de DNV ou d'un emplacement/site client. De plus amples details concernant les exigences specifiques au role seront communiques au cours du processus d'entrevue.
Le poste pourrait egalement etre envisage dans d'autres bureaux de DNV au Canada.
Ce que vous ferez
  • Effectuer des etudes electromagnetiques transitoires (EMT) telles que la resonance subsynchrone (SSR), l'interaction de controle (SSCI), la ferro-resonance, la surtension temporaire (TOV), la surtension de commutation (SOV), la tension de recuperation transitoire (TRV), l'harmonique, l'electrisation, etc.
  • Developper/ajuster des modeles PSCAD, effectuer des analyses comparatives de modeles PSCAD/PSSE
  • Produire et/ou reviser des rapports techniques et des presentations pour des clients externes
  • Achevement en temps opportun des projets assignes tout en respectant la qualite et le budget du projet
  • Restez a jour avec les normes industrielles pertinentes telles que IEEE, NERC, CIGRE
  • Developper ou modifier des scripts d'automatisation pour ameliorer l'efficacite, la rapidite et la precision des simulations techniques
  • Contribuer aux activites de recherche et d'innovation de l'equipe en termes de developpement de nouvelles techniques et/ou d'outils analytiques pour ameliorer la performance de l'equipe en termes d'efficacite et/ou d'amelioration des capacites
  • Cultiver les relations avec les clients, le soutien consultatif technique pour les generations et les interconnexions de charges importantes connectees au reseau de transport

Qualifications:
What is Required
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in Power System and Control
  • Hands-on experience with PSCAD software
  • Knowledge of inverter-based resources (Wind, Solar, Battery Storage) and associated control
  • In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small-signal and large-signal control stability
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills (The employee would be required to draft and review internal documents in English to be used throughout North America)

What is Preferred
  • Active PE License
  • Doctorate degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems
  • Hands on experience performing EMT, SSR studies
  • Experience in scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, DigSilent Power Factory, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN
  • Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices
  • Knowledge of other Electricity Markets (such as PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE) planning & interconnection practices
