Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.
Our mission is to serve as Canada's particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.
TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
The successful candidate will join the TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration to help advance two closely connected flagship projects: commissioning a next-generation ultracold neutron (UCN) source and developing an experiment to measure the neutron's electric dipole moment (nEDM). This efforts push the frontiers of fundamental physics and precision measurement. The new UCN source combines a powerful spallation neutron source with a cryogenic superfluid helium converter to produce world leading densities of ultracold neutrons, opening the door to experiments that were previously out of reach and presenting unique scientific and technical challenges.
Building on this foundation, the candidate will help address one of the biggest open questions in science: why matter exists in our universe. They will contribute to the design, prototyping and commissioning of the TUCAN nEDM experiment, play a key role in bringing the new UCN source online, develop and conduct first experiments, perform data analysis and simulations, and share discoveries through publications and presentations at international conferences. In the process, the candidate will gain hands-on expertise in cryogenics, magnetic field measurements, high-voltage operations, data acquisition systems and hardware programming.
RESPONSIBILITIES:Play a key role in installation, commissioning and first experiments with the next-generation UCN source at TRIUMF including data analysis and simulations
Significantly contribute to the TUCAN EDM experiment, development of its components, integration at TRIUMF and commissioning.
Contribute to and participate in other experiments and projects of the UCN group at TRIUMF
Disseminate results as articles in scientific journals and at national and international conferences and workshops
Contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate students
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Applicants are ideally familiar with UCN and/or EDM-related physics research and have hands-on experience from their graduate studies in experimental hardware development. Experience in areas such as detectors, cold or ultracold neutrons, magnetic and electric field systems, or data acquisition and control is considered beneficial, while curiosity, creativity, and a proactive approach to learning are highly valued.
NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The position might require the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker. This is optional and will be evaluated based on the evolution of the project and if required, training will be provided by TRIUMF.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Qualifications include a recent (within 5 years) Ph.D. in nuclear, particle, atomic, or accelerator physics. Individuals who are expecting to complete a PhD within the next few months are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, high attention to detail, and creativity and flexibility to address challenging problems.
