The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) for a 1-year term. This position will collaborate with researchers across multiple institutions on a CIHR-funded research project titled \xe2\x80\x98Upstream determinants of effective COVID-19 response: learning from comparisons across Canada\xe2\x80\x99s provinces.\xe2\x80\x99. The position will analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative evidence and data collected by investigators in BC, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia to identify learnings resulting from cross-province comparisons under the supervision of Professor Peter Berman.

The position will be located at the School of Population and Public Health. Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.

The primary activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:

Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis. This will primarily focus on data collected by the provincial teams, although, as needed, some additional data collection could be required.

Synthesize findings and develop comparative analyses across the project provinces in collaboration with provincial team leads

Contribute to academic papers (with the aim to produce at least 2 first-author papers)

Errors made could influence the ability of the research team to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of the research project, and therefore impact the credibility of the Principal Investigator. Poor decisions may be damaging to the reputation of the Principal Investigator, the School, and the University and could lead to incorrect or inappropriate policy recommendations being made.

This position will be responsible for access, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed, and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

Supervision Received:

The incumbent will report directly to the provincial team leads, Drs. Peter Berman (UBC), Sara Allin (Ontario), Lara Gautier & Amelie Quesnel-Vallee (Quebec), and Katherine Fierlbeck (Nova Scotia).

Supervision Given:

The incumbent is not expected to be responsible for any direct supervisory roles but will work collaboratively with members from each provincial team.

Education/Work Experience:

The candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g. public health or health policy).

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiar with public health structures and experiences in Canada.

Experienced in quantitative data analysis with statistical software such as STATA.

Experienced in qualitative data (interviews, focus groups, etc.) analysis using NVivo.

Proven experience (publications) in research and implementation work in health economics, health policy, public health, or health systems. First-author publications preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

Able to identify and relate to the concerns of others and to exercise good judgment when resolving difficulties.

Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

Job Requirements: Must currently be legally able to work in Canada. Bilingual (French) is strongly preferred.

University of British Columbia
