Position Overview:
The
Policy and Government Relations Lead
reports directly to the Director, Policy and Government Relations and plays a key role in CHBA BC's policy, advocacy, and government relations work. The successful candidate will support advocacy efforts through research, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement to address key issues impacting the residential construction industry. This is an individual contributor role that supports the Director while leading assigned policy and government relations files and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Advocacy and Policy Analysis
Prepare research and background materials to support advocacy initiatives.
Draft briefing notes, summaries, memos, research papers, position papers, jurisdictional scans, talking points, policy recommendations, and key messages.
Track and analyze relevant policy and advocacy issues at the provincial, national, and local levels, identifying strategic insights.
Draft letters/government submissions.
Lead assigned GR files and support the development and implementation of advocacy strategies.
Manage the execution of special projects supporting CHBA BC's policy and strategic priorities.
Stakeholder and Member Engagement
Gather feedback from members on policy issues, including committee members.
Liaise with stakeholders, including government staff, elected officials, and other stakeholders, to support CHBA BC's advocacy efforts.
Represent CHBA BC at meetings, consultations, and events, as appropriate.
Support the planning and execution of a Legislature Day in Victoria for members, including preparation of materials, research, and logistics.
Communication and Outreach
Develop content for newsletters, websites, webinars, and other communication channels to inform members about policy developments, advocacy activities, and industry updates.
Synthesize complex public policy into clear and concise information for internal and external audiences.
Committee Work
Coordinate committee(s), including maintaining up-to-date committee list(s), timely follow-up on action items, as well as the preparation and distribution of meeting materials.
Act as staff liaison for committee(s) as required.
Track progress on key GR files, including summarizing policy developments and advocacy activities to support the preparation of reports.
Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
A degree in political science, public policy, urban planning, or a related field.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in policy analysis or advocacy, ideally related to housing policy, real estate, development, or urban planning.
Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
Strong research and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.
Excellent writing and communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
Effective organizational and time management abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and take initiative on projects.
Demonstrated ability to manage and navigate complex files and policy issues.
Familiarity with municipal and provincial government processes, as well as previous work experience in the industry or with a member-based association, is an asset.
