About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Policy, the Policy Analyst is responsible for policy development, policy analysis, strategic planning, and corporate reporting.

The Policy Analyst works with provincial and intergovernmental education stakeholders and may represent the department on interdepartmental and intergovernmental initiatives. The Policy Analyst supports the department\'s corporate preparation of the annual business plan and accountability report.

Primary Accountabilities

The Policy Analyst is responsible for:

  • Developing and evaluating policy options and related background material.
  • Supporting the legislative process, including preparation of submissions to Executive Council.
  • Supporting corporate planning and reporting processes.
  • Preparing reports, briefing books and responses relating to education issues in Nova Scotia.
  • Participating in and/or leading work groups on specific policy issues.
  • Working within a team to coordinate partner consultations and other public meetings.
  • Prepares briefing notes and correspondence for senior departmental staff on a wide range of matters related to EECD\'s mandate.
Qualifications and Experience

You will have graduated from a recognized university with a Bachelor\'s degree in a related field plus a minimum of six (6) years\' related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

In addition, you will have:
  • Knowledge of the public policy development process and experience in policy analysis;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Demonstrated experience in report writing and preparation of briefing materials;
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative working relationships; and
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in software packages such as Microsoft Office, including Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.
As the successful candidate, you require independent judgement and initiative, the ability to manage work independently, and the ability to communicate effectively. You will need to be effective in working in a team oriented environment but can also undertake assignments with limited supervision.

The following are considered assets:
  • Knowledge of structure, processes, and key players in government, as well as knowledge and/or experience within the Nova Scotia legislative environment;
  • Familiarity with legislation which falls under the EECD mandate;
  • Understanding of the provincial education system; and
  • Bilingualism (English and French).
We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Pay Grade: PR 15

Salary Range: $2,746.69 - $3,348.16 Bi-Weekly
