Job Description

The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission (APG) is one of the 20 agricultural boards and commissions in Alberta. APG represents over 5,400 farmers who grow field pea, dry bean, chickpea, lentil, faba bean, lupin and soybean in the province of Alberta. Our vision is to "have pulses on every farm and on every plate." To achieve our vision and build the Alberta pulse industry, APG enhances activities at the grassroots level and engages industry in our organization under strategic theme areas of grow, move and use.

The Position:

Policy Analyst is a full-time position.

Reporting:

Reports to the Sustainability & Government Relations Lead.

Position Summary:



Policy Development

In relation to APG's engagement with government and stakeholders, develop and draft policies that support APG in its role as a provincial pulse organization in the Alberta crop sector.

Investigate and analyze positions on various pulse and crop sector issues to present to the Sustainability & Government Relations Lead (SGR Lead), Policy Committee and to the APG board.

Coordinate meetings and supply information on discussions, supporting and engaging APG staff and assisting the SGR Lead on the policy committee.

Report to the SGR Lead & board during provincial meetings on policy topics.

Provide support to APG on policy issues that contribute to cross sectoral provincial topics as well as national collaborating group discussion topics (E.g., Team Alberta Crops, Grain Growers of Canada and Pulse Canada).

Policy Analysis

Review, analyze and report on policy and legislative topics as directed by the SGR Lead.

Provide staff representation and engagement at the Team Alberta Crops collaboration. This includes working with the staff of Team Alberta Crops and other crop sector colleagues to develop policy options and cohesive crop sector messages on key policy issues.

Contribute to Pulse Crop News and other APG related extension on areas of policy and legislative procedures, including agricultural economics and farm business management and insurance.

Provide support to the SGR Lead, APG Directors and, when asked, attend provincial and federal government meetings discussing key pulse policy topics.

Provide support to the Team Alberta Crops engagement on government meetings and consultations in the formation of policy for the crop sector.

Represent APG at various government functions and outreach opportunities.

Assist in responding to provincial and federal consultations as requested by the SGR Lead.

Prepare presentations for the APG board or other audiences specific to policy topics of importance to the sector.

General

As needed, support grower outreach on questions related to APG.

Participate in outreach activities, such as attendance at relevant trade shows and tours, as well as participate in industry meetings.

Always represent APG in a business-like and professional manner.

Assist the SGR Lead with other duties as needed.

Assets for a successful application include direct experience with policy analysis, experience with legislative and parliamentary procedures, proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidates with a degree in agricultural economics, political science, or ag business will be considered. Asset qualifications include working proficiency in both official languages, a master's degree and/or three or more years of work experience in the ag sector and a background in western Canadian agriculture. Alberta Pulse Growers provides a salary and benefit package that is competitive with the marketplace.

Alberta Pulse Growers Commission is located in Leduc, Alberta. A valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to travel approximately 20-30 days a year are required.
