The Butchart Gardens is looking for someone to fill the following position:

DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE

POSITION: PLUMBING APPRENTICE

DUTIES:

Working under the direction of the Plumbing Specialists:

Assist with maintaining extensive potable and irrigation water systems.

Assist with maintaining The Gardens storm water and sewer system.

Maintain water fountains large and small, other water features, and associated equipment including swimming pools.

Install and maintain a variety of equipment found within commercial establishments such as restaurants, office buildings, and greenhouse complexes.

Ensure compliance of CRD Cross Connection Control Program and maintenance/testing of related equipment.

Assist with compliance of CRD Wastewater Source Control Bylaws and maintenance of related equipment.

Assist The Gardens to remain in compliance with applicable Plumbing and Gas Codes.

Maintain safe work practices.

Work with other departments and staff in non plumbing related activities when the need arises to meet the goal expected.

REQUIREMENTS:

Registered apprentice 2 years' experience.

Certification as a Backflow Assembly Tester, or be willing to obtain certification.

Conversant with B.C. Plumbing Code and other applicable codes, regulations and standards.

Knowledge of Fire Sprinkler & Refrigeration Systems would be an asset.

Understanding of and adherence to WHMIS and WorkSafe BC Regulations.

Valid B.C. Driver's license.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Possess analytical/problem solving skills.

Ability to work unsupervised.

Must be capable of physical work in inclement weather. (Physical assessment required).

Follow company policies and procedures and support the management team.

Must supply own hand tools.

This is a year-round full-time position with a 6-month probationary period. Shifts will primarily be Monday to Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm. The candidate should expect occasional shifts that include the following: on call pager, evenings and weekends, and overtime. We offer competitive wages starting at $30.86/hour, 3 weeks' vacation,

(plus an additional 2 weeks paid staff holiday during The Gardens closure each year), flexibility for time off, health and dental benefits, HCSA, and matched RRSP benefits, following a successful 6-month probationary period. The position will commence at a mutually agreed upon date.
