The purpose of this position is to maintain plumbing/HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Cooling) equipment and systems that are located in various buildings operated by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. The incumbent is required to diagnose problems and complete the required repairs or adjustments with minimal direction. The work includes installation and repair of plumbing and mechanical equipment and systems, in accordance with applicable codes and regulations, as well as the preventative maintenance of mechanical and electrical components and building systems. Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Assess requests for plumbing or mechanical repairs/renovations and determine the appropriate method of resolving the request and completing the required work in accordance with applicable codes and regulations;
  • Interpret blueprints and building specifications to map layout for pipes, drainage systems, and other plumbing materials;
  • Install pipes and fixtures, such as sinks and toilets, for water, steam, air, or other liquids. Assemble fittings and valves for installation;
  • Modify length of pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing materials as needed for a building. Install heating and air-conditioning systems, including water heaters;
  • Collaborate with contractors, construction workers, electricians, pipefitters, and steamfitters in installing and repairing plumbing;
  • Participate on a rotating basis with other maintenance personnel, in receiving and attending to after-hours emergency calls;
  • Investigate mechanical systems and carry out necessary repairs or replacement of worn or defective parts, in accordance with applicable codes and regulations;
  • Complete inspections/checks of various building systems: boilers, sump pumps, water softeners, etc.;
  • Analyse problems and identify appropriate tools and materials for repair. Write reports documenting the problem and summary of actions taken;
  • Maintain accurate records of materials and supplies used to carry out work and ensure that the same are reported on the work order;
  • Review and approve, or recommend for approval, invoices, work orders, etc.;
  • Maintain the necessary records of plumbing work performed on all buildings by filling out work orders, purchase orders, inspection checklists, etc.;
  • Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must have Grade 12 or GED equivalent.
  • Must have Certificate of Trades Qualification in Plumbing as issued by PEI Government, supplemented by Red Seal Endorsement.
  • Considerable experience related to plumbing trade in a multi-building, commercial environment.
  • Experience related to computer software (i.e., word processing, spreadsheets, email platforms).
  • Have good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills in order to maintain good relationships with staff and officials.
  • Must have good time management skills and be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to work on an on-call rotation schedule and will be required to respond to after hour emergencies; therefore, there is a residency requirement which requires the incumbent live in Queens County, ensuring the probability of reporting to an emergency in a timely manner.
  • Must have ability to calculate quantity of materials. Ability to read, interpret and understand construction plans and specifications.
  • Must have strong decision-making, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must be medically and physically fit to perform all duties of the position including working in confined spaces and elevated work platforms.
  • Must have a valid PEI Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License with a satisfactory driver\xe2\x80\x99s abstract and access to reliable transportation.
  • Must have good working knowledge and experience with the National Building Code National Plumbing Code.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain WHIMIS, CPR and First Aid training.
  • The successful incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check and Vulnerable Sector check, prior to employment.
  • The successful incumbent must provide a current hearing test, prior to employment.
  • Must have good previous work and attendance record.
  • Experience with HVAC and building management systems would be considered an asset.
