Under general supervision of the Technologist Team Lead in Whitehorse, performs regular inspections of all plant equipment (across various sites), checks for proper operation; reports any faults or malfunctions; performs minor mechanical repair and routine maintenance; operates units as required; performs related administrative duties such as the preparation of operation/maintenance reports, ordering of filters, fuel, etc. processing of paperwork, checks invoices for accuracy and forwarding for approval and payment.

What You Get to Do:

  • Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, checking and/or changing levels/fluid (oil, glycol, filters), lubricants, setting valves for generating units.
  • Assists with the repairs and/or replacement of defective parts.
  • Assists with unit overhauls.
  • Performs regular housekeeping functions at the sites ensuring all equipment, facilities and surrounding grounds are kept clean and free of debris.
  • Ensures that all Yukon Electrical's site requirements are adhered to in accordance with the Safety Standard Manual.
  • Ensures facilities are always secure through proper lighting and restricting access where required.
  • Prepares maintenance reports detailing the work performed and maintains histories on the various pieces of equipment on site; completes all month-end reports.
  • Records and enters readings from instruments and meters into the maintenance system.
  • Identifies the need for replacement parts, consumables and other material required.
  • Processes paperwork related to the purchase of filters, other goods & materials, checking for receipt of goods and accuracy of invoices, and forwards for approval and payment.
  • Assists to investigate and prepare loss control reports as per Loss Control Policy.
  • Manages external contractors and temporary employees hired to do snow removal, brushing, fencing etc., including performing worksite and health and safety orientations.
  • Provides input to and recommends changes to Yukon Electrical's maintenance standards.
  • Participates and successfully completes, and applies all technical and non-technical training courses
  • Undertakes a temporary assignment to a higher classification or position if requested.
  • Mentors and assists in the development of junior technologists as required.
  • Responds to customer service requirements by starting and stopping of engines, putting units on and offline to support distribution requirements and to regulate the flow of electrical power; assists in locating and isolating system problems during routine system testing.
  • Monitors and visually inspects station instruments, meters, and alarms to ensure that voltages and line loadings are within prescribed limits and to detect equipment failures, line disturbances and outages.
  • Takes readings and records performance of unit(s) including voltages generated, oil pressures and temperatures (oil, air intake, exhaust, etc.)
  • Locates problems with equipment based on observation or readings and report findings.
  • Conducts orientations, issues work permits and isolations to contractors and internal personnel.
  • Reconciles fuel inventory by ensuring that fuel storage tanks are dipped regularly and balanced against fuel deliveries and consumption.
  • Maintains sites in a clean and orderly fashion ensuring that all debris/refuse is removed and disposed of according to company policy; floor and working surfaces are clean, safe, and suitable for work; ensures all surplus supplies and materials are appropriately stored.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  • Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions.
  • Responsible for the safe care and use of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Participates in safety meetings.
  • Completes site required inspections and job observations.
  • Assists in accident investigations as required.
  • Participates in all mandatory safety training in up to date this includes Driver Training, WHIMS, TDG, and First-Aid.
  • Ensures all activities are performed in accordance with established safety and environmental policies, inclusion and diversity policies, work procedures and practices, and applicable government legislation.
  • Participates and successfully completes and applies all technical and non-technical training courses.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma.
  • Trade/Apprenticeship preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year of on-the-job experience in a related role.
  • A valid Operator's license for the vehicles to be operated.
  • A valid First Aid Certificate with CPR certification.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and components.
  • An aptitude for mechanics, manual dexterity, and the ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to qualify for enrollment in an apprenticeship in Heavy Duty Mechanics, Millwright, or other similar trade. Completion of company and provincial tests will be mandatory to remain in and advance through the apprenticeship process.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to understand and follow Yukon Electrical policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Basic computer skills.

Whitehorse is a designated community and a comprehensive norther benefit package will be provided, including:
  • An additional 5% of base salary (northern allowance)
  • An additional $600 a month (northern allowance)
  • Additional 5 days' vacation for North of 60 positions
