Main Purpose & Function

There is a vacancy for a Planning Assistant III in the Planning, Urban Design, and Sustainability Department \xe2\x80\x93 Community Planning Division. This position would provide technical and professional support to teams undertaking policy development, program planning, training and implementation for reconciliation, cultural redress and equity in the Department of Planning, Urban Design and Sustainability.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Many of the duties associated with this position will involve support to planning professionals who are undertaking various programs, policies and applications. This Planning Assistant is responsible for performing technical work related to reconciliation and culture change programs, including:

  • Conducting surveys, research, data and special analysis, as well as developing newsletters, maps and informational graphics;
  • Assisting with policy and program development, Council reports, memos, and briefings;
  • Organizing and participating in public engagement processes and meetings, including booking venues, advertising events, and notifications;
  • Preparing materials for meetings, workshops, and open houses, including mailing lists, presentations, and information boards;
  • Facilitating small group discussions, preparing meeting notes, and summarizing and analysing public comments;
  • Maintaining web pages and list-servs;
  • Responding to development and rezoning enquiries, and general enquiries on the reconciliation and culture change programs from diverse stakeholder groups and the general public;
  • Providing support for implementation of reconciliation and culture change programs;
  • Perform other related duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Completion of twelfth school grade or equivalent in Technical or Vocational school supplemented or including courses in graphics, along with Planning Assistant II experience or technical work experience of a planning nature, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • University degree in Planning, Indigenous Relations/Studies/Governance would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working effectively with Indigenous or racialised communities is preferred.
  • Capability to speak an additional language is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Relevant lived experience combined with a broad perspective lens on supporting best practices in advancing equity, reconciliation, redress and decolonization is an asset.
  • Knowledge of community development and capacity building approaches, in particular those involving equity-denied communities is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and participate successfully on teams, and to work with the public.
  • Completion of assignments using sound professional techniques and judgment.
  • Proven ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g. prioritize tasks, communicate expected timeframes for the delivery of items with staff and request assistance when needed).
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated sound research and analytical abilities and experience, and an aptitude in the technical aspects of planning work.
  • Working knowledge of zoning and land-use planning and regulations, land development economics, public space planning, and urban design principles is an asset.
  • Sound knowledge with ArcGis, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and strong graphic skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) is required.
  • Familiarity with rezoning processes is an asset.
  • Ability to meet transportation requirements.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 \xe2\x80\x93 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.

The City\xe2\x80\x99s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
