Position Overview:
The Planning team at Aplin Martin is growing and we are looking for a collaborative and resourceful Planning Analyst. This is an intermediate position, supporting a wide variety of planning projects, working in tandem with the urban designers while receiving guidance and mentorship from the project planners and the planning mangers. This is a great position for someone who wants to build their planning career working in a private consulting environment. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact and coordinate with outside agencies, select industry partners and subconsultants.
  • Coordinate and attend site visits, when required.
  • Review Bylaw and Policies documents and research project background information.
  • Develop planning studies and reports in support of new and updated plans, programs, and regulations.
  • Attend evening and/or weekend meetings for Committee/Council meetings, public meetings, and Client meetings, when required. \xe2\x80\xa2 Prepare, coordinate, and attend open houses.
  • Prepare technical information for meetings.
  • Answer Clients on day-to-day technical enquiries and assist in resolving citizen and customer issues.
  • Provides information to the public regarding development regulations.
  • Follow established project schedule. \xe2\x80\xa2 Undertake technical, proposal, and memorandum writing.
  • Assist in the review of moderately difficult site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Collect a variety of statistical data and prepare reports and maps.
  • May perform basic subdivision and conceptual layout design as well as graphic illustration.
  • Prepare and coordinate development application packages. Typical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning.
  • Knowledge of a relevant specialization such as transportation, land use, or affordable housing is desired.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
  • Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
  • General knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications, and GIS.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s degree in urban planning, architecture, public policy, or related area of study in addition to 0-5 years of planning experience. Other positions at this level require a master\'s degree but, in these cases, no formal experience is usually required.
  • Eligibility /Enrollment for MCIP accreditation.
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems.
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
  • Ability to create graphic designs, development strategies, and render site plans via sketches and/or computer graphics highly desirable.
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed.
  • Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind.
