Matrix HR is urgently looking for a Pipelayer - Water & Sewer to install, align, and commission municipal water- and wastewater-line piping to specification, ensuring safety, quality, and schedule compliance on civil-infrastructure projects.
Location & Schedule
Project site: Grande Prairie, AB (and surrounding municipal works)
Start date: Immediate
Pay: CA$31.00-CA$39.00 per hour
Shifts: Typical 10- to 12-hour day shifts, Monday-Friday; overtime, night, or weekend work may be required to meet project milestones.
Key Responsibilities
Lay, laser-grade, and align PVC, HDPE, concrete, and ductile pipe for water, sanitary, and storm systems.
Set and test manholes, catch basins, valves, and related appurtenances.
Interpret trench-box/sloping requirements; work safely in and around excavations.
Direct heavy-equipment operators during trenching, backfilling, and compaction.
Rig pipe sections for crane or excavator pick; signal operators and control placement.
Verify grades/elevations with lasers and levels; perform air, mandrel, or hydro testing as required.
Document as-built data and report deviations to site supervision.
Comply with client, provincial, and COR-certified safety systems.
Participate in FLHAs, toolbox talks, and near-miss reporting.
Work collaboratively with labourers and operators; mentor apprentices; liaise with
project engineers and inspectors.
Assist with related civil scopes (e.g., refrigerated-floor construction) as directed.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience: Minimum 3 years (5+ preferred) as a pipelayer in municipal water/sewer construction.
Technical skills: Able to read grade stakes, laser levels, and site drawings; familiarity with trench safety and rigging.
Certifications: CSTS-20 (or equivalent), WHMIS, Ground Disturbance; valid Class 5 license with clean abstract.
Assets: Confined-Space Entry, Rigging & Hoisting, First Aid, GPS layout experience, and/or journeyperson credential.
Pre-employment drug & alcohol testing and reference checks are mandatory.
Working Conditions
Outdoor construction environment with exposure to noise, dust, vibration, and varying weather conditions.
Frequent bending, kneeling, and climbing into trenches; extended periods on foot.
Use of hand tools, pneumatic tampers, lasers, and small powered equipment.
