The primary role of the Physician Assistant (Oncology Hospitalist) is to participate in the assessment and care of hospitalized oncology patients under the supervision of the attending physician. The PA will provide care under delegation using evidence-based clinical practice standards, adhering to established protocols, and within the medical directives endorsed by the RVH Medical Advisory Committee. As an integrated member of the health care team, the PA will demonstrate commitment to life-long learning, quality improvement, patient safety, and collaborative team-based care.

Qualifications
Education:
Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent
Undergraduate Degree
Graduate of a Canadian or US Accredited Physician Assistant Education Program
Eligible to challenge the National Physician Assistant Certificate Exam, or Canadian Physician Assistant Certification - Mandatory
Confirmed registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario or with an application pending approval.
BCLS, and ACLS
Experience
Experience in Internal Medicine, Oncology, or Hospitalist settings strongly preferred
Competencies
Integrate all core PA competencies to provide optimal, ethical, and patient-centered medical care
Perform complete and appropriate clinical assessments of hospitalized oncology patients and formulate clinical treatment plans
Use preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions effectively
Demonstrate proficient use of diagnostic and procedural skills relevant to oncology and inpatient medicine
Recognize scope of practice while demonstrating effective consultation practices with supervising physicians and other healthcare professionals

Responsibilities
Clinical and General Responsibilities
Obtain health histories including demographics, chief complaint, history of present illness, past medical/surgical history, family and psychosocial history, medications, and allergies
Perform comprehensive assessments, develop differential diagnoses, order appropriate investigations, and coordinate management of oncology inpatients
Provide ongoing inpatient care, including daily rounds, progress notes, discharge planning, and continuity of care
Support the management of acute complications of cancer and its treatments (e.g., febrile neutropenia, thromboembolism, metabolic emergencies, pain, palliative symptom management)
Perform procedures such as venipuncture, blood gas collection, ECG interpretation, and other procedures within scope and training
Support use of healthcare technology and applications such as Connecting Ontario, Meditech Expanse, and electronic order sets
Communication
Provide timely updates to supervising physicians and seek further direction as needed
Communicate clearly with patients, families, and caregivers, offering education and support
Liaise with interprofessional team members and other hospital departments
Medical Documentation and Record Keeping
Maintain accurate and complete documentation of patient encounters, care plans, and consult requests
Ensure appropriate medical documentation for admissions, progress notes, and discharge summaries
Collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Team
Work closely with oncologists, hospitalists, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians, palliative care, and other allied health staff
Collaborate with affiliated specialties including General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Palliative Care
Supervision
The PA will work under the direct supervision of hospitalist.
